Erased (Monday)

Read: PSALM 32:1-5

Marshall tossed and turned in his bed. He knew it was the lie he had told that kept pricking his conscience and was keeping him awake. He punched the pillow, snuggled deeper under the covers, and squeezed his eyes shut. But he could not turn off the little voice in his head. Tell your mom you're sorry. Tell the truth...tell the truth...tell the truth.

Marshall finally gave up. He scrambled out of bed and stumbled into the living room. His mom looked up from her computer as he burst into sobs. "What's the matter, honey?" she asked. "Did you have a bad dream?"

Marshall shook his head. "No," he choked out. "I...I told you a lie. I said I didn't know how that figurine you like so much broke, but I do. I was tossing a ball around and knocked it off the shelf." Marshall sniffed loudly. "I'm sorry."

Mom hugged him. "It hurts to know you lied to me, Marshall, and you know that means you'll be grounded for a few days--we've talked about that before. But I'm glad you confessed." She turned her computer toward him. "Let me show you something. Look at this word I just typed. What's wrong with it?"

Marshall looked at the computer screen through his tears. "You made a mistake. You spelled forgive F-O-R-G-E-V-E.'"

"Can you fix it for me?" asked Mom.

"Sure! But you know how to fix it too, Mom," said Marshall. He pressed a couple of keys. "There! Now it's spelled right."

Mom nodded. "If I ignored my mistake, it never would have been corrected. But when you took the necessary steps to correct it, it was easily fixed, right?" Marshall nodded as his mother's words sank in. "Ignoring sin doesn't take care of it either," continued Mom. "When we sin, we must do exactly what you just did about lying--confess it. When we confess our sin to Jesus, He forgives us and helps us move past it."

"I already confessed what I did to Jesus," Marshall said. "I sure do feel better now that I've confessed to you too." He yawned. "I think I can sleep now."

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you ignoring a sin in your life? Do you want God’s forgiveness? Then confess it to Jesus. He died and rose again to save you from sin, and He will forgive you so you can put it behind you and do what’s right instead. You may need to apologize to someone else too. Why not do that right away? You’ll be glad you did.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 1 JOHN 1:9 (KJV)

IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. (NKJV)

Clean inside and out (Tuesday)

Read: PSALM 119:9-16

Presley put her napkin down and sighed. "What a great lunch!" She looked out the window. "Can we go to that park with the fountain now?" She pointed down the block, where a fountain near the sidewalk squirted water over anyone walking close by.

"Oh, that looks like fun!" said Presley's brother, John. "Can we go, Dad?"

With their parents' permission, the kids raced off down the block. Mom followed them while Dad paid the lunch bill. When he joined them, Presley and John were laughing and shouting as they tried to dodge the jets of water that squirted out of holes in the fountain. When they saw their dad there, they ran toward him and pretended they were going to hug him and get him all wet too.

"Look over there!" John pointed to some little kids who had gone over to a large sandbox after playing in the water. "Those kids have sand and dirt all over them!"

Dad chuckled. "Their parents are going to have to get them cleaned up when they go home."

After Presley and John had dried off, they all headed home. "Do you know what those kids in the sandbox made me think of?" Mom asked. "A verse I memorized when I was a kid--Psalm 119:9. It says, How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.'"

"I know that verse!" said Presley. "Though the version we learned in church used some different words. It said a young person can stay pure by obeying God's Word."

Dad nodded. "Those kids back there needed to get cleaned up on the outside, but we all need to be cleaned on the inside--and according to God's Word, only Jesus can do that. The Bible says when we trust in Him to save us from sin, He gives us a clean heart and His Holy Spirit, who guides us in obeying God and doing what's right."

"So, that verse is saying if we pay attention to what God's Word says about Jesus and trust in Him, we can be clean," John said.

"Right," said Mom. "He makes us clean on the inside so we can live a pure life for Him." CAROLYN E. YOST

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever gotten REALLY dirty—maybe by playing in mud or sand? You probably felt the need to take a bath afterward, didn’t you? The Bible says we all need to be cleaned on the inside—we all have the dirt of sin in our hearts. God gave us His Word to show us how we can have our sin removed and be made pure—by trusting in Jesus. Trust Him to give you a clean heart today. The Ketchup bottle (Wednesday)

Read: MATTHEW 22:37-40; LUKE 6:43-45

"I still don't see why we had to move," Gwen complained to her brother as they walked home from school.

"Well, it's not so bad here," Liam replied. "The kids at our new school are pretty nice."

Gwen scowled. "I don't think so. Some kid bumped into me during lunch and spilled milk on my shirt. It left a spot. I told him what I thought of him!"

As they rounded a corner, Liam stepped in a puddle, splashing her.

"Hey! Look what you just did!" Gwen yelled, pointing to a few small spatters of mud on her pants.

"I'm sorry," said Liam. "I didn't even notice the puddle."

"I don't believe you, you liar!" Gwen said angrily before hurrying on ahead of him.

Gwen's bad mood continued through dinner. She complained about the mud and the milk episodes. Then she looked down at her plate. "Oh, yuck! I put ketchup on my ham. I meant to use mustard." Gwen sighed. "This will taste about as bad as the stuff they fed us in the cafeteria today. Meals at our old school were much better."

"We've heard enough complaints, Gwen," said Mom. "This move hasn't been easy for any of us, but you're the only one who continually grumbles about it."

"Gwen, what comes out when you squeeze the ketchup bottle?" asked Dad as he held it up.

"Ketchup, of course," said Gwen.

"And what comes out if you squeeze the mustard bottle?" asked Dad.

Gwen rolled her eyes. "Mustard, Dad!"

Dad nodded and set the mustard and ketchup bottles down in front of his plate. "Whatever is inside comes out. Our whole family was squeezed in this move. How we react says a lot about our relationship with Jesus and how we trust Him in difficult situations. The Bible says, The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.' Our words and attitude show what's inside our hearts--whether it's patience and kindness or anger and bitterness."

Gwen stared at her plate, thinking about her dad's words.

"Tomorrow is another day," said Mom. "Let's all remember that Jesus promises to always be with us and use everything in our lives for good, then trust Him to help us through this difficult move." HOLLY F. CEPEDA

HOW ABOUT YOU?

What comes out of your mouth if you’re squeezed by something you don’t like? What you say shows what’s in your heart. Is your heart filled with love for God and others? Or is it overflowing with selfishness or bitterness? Talk to Jesus about it. Seek His help. Ask Him to change your heart and attitude so good things come from your mouth.

Don’t Forget (Thursday)

Read: LUKE 17:11-19

Dayton waved as his friend Cole hopped out of the van, then moved into the front seat beside his mother. "That was fun!" he told her. "I wish we could have a Sunday school class picnic every Saturday."

Mom grinned wearily. "I don't! After all the work involved, I'm pretty exhausted."

When they got home, Dad opened the car door. "Let me carry in the leftovers--if there are any," he said. "Did everyone have a good time?"

"They seemed to," Mom said as she handed Dayton the volleyball equipment. Then she frowned. "But none of them said thank you. I brought the food, planned the games, and gave them rides to and from the park. And not one person thanked me!"

"They just forgot, Mom," Dayton said. "They all had such a good time, they just forgot to thank you. They think you're a great teacher."

"Where do you want this cooler?" asked Dad.

"Just set it on the counter," Mom replied. "I'll take care of it later." Her brows wrinkled. "I think the kids in my class need to learn better manners."

Dayton looked at her and grinned. "Aren't you forgetting something, Mom?"

Mom looked puzzled. "I don't think so. You brought in the games, and Dad brought in the cooler and the rest of the stuff. That's everything."

"I know." Dayton grinned. "And you forgot to thank us."

Mom looked startled, and then she laughed. "I should practice what I preach!"

"And we should all practice what Pastor Nelson preaches," said Dad. "Remember his sermon last week on gratitude?"

Mom nodded. "I guess we all forget to say thank you sometimes, don't we? Especially to God for all He's done for us. He's given us salvation and eternal life through Jesus and continues to bless us in other ways every day. But we often take those gifts for granted instead of thanking Him."

Just then Mom's phone buzzed, and she picked it up. "Well, what do you know! It's a text from Cole thanking me for a great day at the park."

Dad winked at Dayton. "Looks like someone did remember to say to say thank you!" The two of them exchanged grins as Mom's phone buzzed again.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you remember to say thank you? It’s important to thank people when they do something for you. Do you remember to thank Jesus too? He died on the cross for your sins so you could have eternal life! Why not stop right now and thank Him for all He’s done for you?

Who will You listen To? (Friday)

Read: EPHESIANS 6:10-18

A dodgeball whizzed past Grace's head, and she ducked, toppling over the plastic chair she'd been sitting in. I've had enough of this, she thought. The only time anyone notices me is when I get in the way of their games. She grabbed her backpack and marched out of the gym.

In the bathroom, Grace curled up on the floor behind a blue stall door. It was safe here, better here. Away from the people, away from the noise.

"Breathe," she whispered, but her breaths just got choppier and tears swelled under her eyes. Even at church, people just didn't get it. Nobody likes the quiet people. You have to be strong, athletic, pretty. And Grace was none of those things.

"I'm junk." The words seeped through her skin, stung every square inch till it all felt numb. "Nobody needs me here. Nobody wants me."

She knew it was wrong though. All those Bible verses she'd memorized in church, all the things the teachers and pastors had said, came flooding back. God made you, on purpose. Jesus died for you to make you His.

"God, if You love me, why won't You give me friends?" Grace asked.

He gave His only Son.

Grace sat for a few minutes, thinking. She knew it was true. Jesus was the best friend she could ever have. He didn't laugh at people or call them names. He talked to lonely people, like the woman at the well. He healed them, even when they were dirty like the lepers. He loved people and reached out to them.

Maybe He could help her reach out to people too.

She still had tears on her cheeks, but she stood up and took a few deep breaths. "Okay, God. You're right. Thanks for reminding me how much You love me. Help me listen to the truth of Your Word and not the lies in my head."

Grace went back to the gym and took a seat against the wall. She felt a tap on her shoulder and spun around to see Emmie, the girl who always had a pencil stuck in her choppy brown hair. "Hey, Grace. I'm practicing sketching people. Would you be my model?"

Grace smiled and nodded. "That would be great." OLIVIA WHITE

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you being told lies? Lies that you don’t matter or that nobody loves you? Maybe you’re hearing those lies inside your own head. Don’t listen to them. Satan uses lies to isolate us from God and others. He doesn’t want us knowing or sharing the truth that we are deeply loved by God, who sent His Son, Jesus, to die for us. When you feel discouraged, listen to the truth of God’s Word.
