Eyeballs, Feet, and Where Do You Fit In? (Monday)

Read: ROMANS 12:4-8

The noise of the polisher buzzed in Thabo's ears as he approached his dad in the driveway. Dad had been working on this old car for months.

"Hey, buddy!" Dad turned off the polisher. "Come see how good this paint is looking with a bit of spit and polish."

"That's gross, Dad." Normally Thabo would've laughed at his dad's jokes, but today his heart was as heavy as the bag he'd packed for camp.

Dad frowned. "You're getting ready for junior church camp. Are you nervous?"

Thabo shrugged. "They chose group leaders. I wanted to be one so Jesus could use me to help someone."

"And only leaders make a difference?" Dad asked.

Thabo nodded. "I don't want to go. If I was good enough, I would have been picked."

Dad pulled Thabo closer. "You see this toolbox of mine? I've got a whole bunch of different things in here. When I need to buff the paint, I use this soft pad and my drill. Feel it."

Thabo ran his fingers across the fluffy polishing disc. It felt softer than his cat's fur.

Dad took out a screwdriver. The sharp tip gleamed in the bright African sunlight. "Now, can you imagine if I tried to polish the car with this?"

"That's nuts, Dad! It would scratch the paintwork."

"Exactly. Maybe I should throw it away. It seems pretty useless."

"No, Dad! You can't do that. It's useful for other things. You can't tighten screws with the paint buffer." Clearly Dad had been out in the sun too long.

Dad grinned. "That's a good point. Each tool has its own purpose, and I've needed all of them to get this car restored. You weren't chosen as a group leader this time, but you can pray for someone or pack chairs. Jesus can use you in other ways."

"Oh! I get it," said Thabo. "The kids at camp are like your toolbox. We all need each other."

"Just like I need all these tools to fix the car--or how each part of the body is needed to function." Dad slipped an arm around Thabo's shoulders. "That's how the Bible describes Christians--as the body of Christ. We each need to do our part so we can serve Him together." DIANNE J. WILSON

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you feel bad when others are able to serve in ways you can’t? It’s time to find out where you fit in with the abilities God has given you. An eyeball would make a terrible foot, but can you imagine life without your eyes? Even if the way Jesus wants you to serve now doesn’t seem as exciting as what someone else is doing, do it gladly. Do your part so we can serve Jesus together.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: ROMANS 12:4-5 (KJV)

JUST AS OUR BODIES HAVE MANY PARTS AND EACH PART HAS A SPECIAL FUNCTION, SO IT IS WITH CHRIST’S BODY. WE ARE MANY PARTS OF ONE BODY, AND WE ALL BELONG TO EACH OTHER. (NLT)

The Strength of Little Ones (Tuesday)

Read: 1 TIMOTHY 4:12-14

It was a hot Sunday afternoon and Brandon, Bryan, and Mom were squatting beside a little anthill in their backyard. Their eyes followed the busy movements of each little ant as it carried crumbs up and down the anthill.

Suddenly Bryan, who had just turned five, looked up at Mom and said, "Guess what? My Sunday school teacher asked me to help her lead worship in our class next week!"

"That's great, Bryan! I'm glad you have a heart to serve God," Mom replied with a smile.

"Pshhh," Brandon scoffed with an eye roll. He opened his mouth to say something but closed it when Mom shook her head at him.

After a few more minutes of looking at the ants, Bryan went to play in the sandbox. When he was out of earshot, Brandon turned to his mom. "Bryan's not really leading worship, is he? He's not old enough! He can barely read and probably can't pronounce any of the worship lyrics correctly."

"Well, he's not leading worship in the same way our worship pastor does in the main church service," said Mom. "But he's capable of helping his teacher choose which songs to sing in their Sunday school class and encouraging the other kids to sing."

"But Mom, Bryan is barely five," Brandon argued.

"He can still use his gifts to serve the Lord," Mom replied. "God gives everyone the ability to serve Him and give Him glory, no matter how old they are. In the Bible, Paul tells Timothy not to let anyone look down at him because he was younger than everyone else."

Mom looked at the anthill. "Look at it this way," she said, pointing to the ants. "Ants are one of the smallest animals on land, yet they are still capable of doing many things. Their capability might not be as apparent as, let's say, an elephant, but if you observe closely, you'll see ants are actually very strong for their size. Likewise, we shouldn't underestimate Bryan's capability just because he's young. Jesus can use him to do important things."

"Hmm," Brandon said as he watched the ants carry crumbs as big as they were up the anthill. "Maybe I should go ask Bryan what songs he wants to sing next week." LILLIAN HSIAO

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you look down on those younger than you and think they can’t serve Jesus like you can? Or maybe people look down on you because you are young. Know that God gives each of us the ability to serve Him at any age. No matter what stage of life you or anyone else is in, we can all use the gifts God has given us to serve Him and point people to Jesus.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 1 TIMOTHY 4:12 (KJV)

DON’T LET ANYONE LOOK DOWN ON YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE YOUNG, BUT SET AN EXAMPLE FOR THE BELIEVERS IN SPEECH, IN CONDUCT, IN LOVE, IN FAITH AND IN PURITY. (NIV)

Poison Ivy Tree (Wednesday)

Read: JOHN 15:1-9

"How's the wood chopping going?" Kara's mom asked as she set the lunch plates on the table.

"It's going well," Dad replied. "I found several dead trees that were ready to come down."

After the family thanked God for their meal and began to pass the food, Dad chuckled and said, "You know, I spent all morning avoiding a tree I thought was alive because it was full of green leaves. It wasn't until I stepped back and looked up that I realized it was a dead tree that was completely covered in poison ivy vines!"

"That sounds like how people can be sometimes," said Mom.

Dad nodded knowingly, but Kara looked confused. "What do you mean, Mom?"

"Well, people can appear to be full of life--keeping busy, doing all the right things, making it look like their lives are in order--but spiritually be as dead as that tree. Just like the poison ivy tricked Dad, our good deeds can keep us from recognizing we have no relationship with the living God. It's not until our hearts are transformed by Jesus and given life through the Holy Spirit that we begin to experience true life."

Kara thought about how she acted one way at school and another way at church. She pretended to accept all that her parents and teachers at church taught her, but the truth was she cared more about what her friends thought than what God's Word said. Maybe she was like that dead, poison ivycovered tree.

After the lunch dishes were cleared and Dad had gone back to the woods, Kara sought out her mom for a conversation. "Mom," she said, "I think I'm kind of like that tree."

Mom listened quietly as Kara continued. "I do all the right things at church and act like I believe, but I think I need to make a decision to trust Jesus and not just pretend to. Can you help me?"

"I sure can, honey," Mom replied as she reached for her Bible. "And I'm excited to think about how much joy you will have once His Spirit is living in you. You'll discover that Jesus fills you with more life and hope than you could ever imagine." KAREN MCMILLAN

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you have the true life only Jesus gives? Or, like Kara, have you been pretending to follow Jesus without really giving your heart to Him? Acting like a Christian does not make you one. Jesus is ready and willing to give you life through the power of His death and resurrection. Don’t wait any longer—trust in Him today. I AM THE VINE; YOU ARE THE BRANCHES. IF YOU REMAIN IN ME AND I IN YOU, YOU WILL BEAR MUCH FRUIT; APART FROM ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING. (NIV)

Very Bad Day (Thursday)

Read: PSALM 86:1-7

Graham sat down next to his dad on the couch and sighed. "Is something bothering you?" Dad asked.

"I had a bad day at school today," Graham replied quietly.

"I'm sorry," said Dad. "Want to tell me about it?"

"Well, on the way to school, a boy on the bus threw a wad of gum, and it got stuck in my hair," said Graham. "Our principle had to use an ice cube to unstick it!"

"And I suppose that made you late for class," Dad said.

Graham nodded. "Yeah, so before going to lunch, I had to finish the work I missed by coming in late and didn't get to the cafeteria in time to eat with my friends. So I sat at a table alone."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Dad said.

Graham shrugged. "After school, I just wanted to get home, so I grabbed my stuff and went out to the bus. But when I got home, I realized I left a homework assignment that's due tomorrow in my locker. Now I'll probably be marked down for turning it in late." Graham frowned. "It was an awful day."

"Want to know what I do when I have a bad day?" Dad asked.

Graham turned to his dad. "Tell Mom about it?"

"Yes, that's one of the things I do, and it helps," Dad said. "Didn't sharing your day with me make you feel a little better?"

"A little, but what else do you do?" Graham asked.

"I also share my problems with someone else--I share them with Jesus," replied Dad. "He knows what it's like to have a bad day--He experienced the worst day of all when He suffered and died for our sins. But He was willing to do that so we could one day be free of bad days once and for all and live with Him forever. I always feel better when I talk to Him and am reminded of that." Dad smiled at Graham. "You can talk with Him too. He loves you and cares about what you're going through. Wouldn't you like to tell Him all the things that happened to you today?"

Graham nodded. "I better start now--I have a lot to tell Him!"

VERONICA R. GUERRIERO

HOW ABOUT YOU?

When you’re having a bad day, do you talk to someone about it? It often helps to share your problems with a parent or a friend. Jesus wants to hear about what’s bothering you too. You can talk to Him anytime, and He’ll listen and help you with your problems. He won’t always make them go away, but He’ll remind you how much He loves you and help you know how to handle them.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:  PSALM 86:7 (KJV)

IN THE DAY OF MY TROUBLE I WILL CALL UPON YOU, FOR YOU WILL ANSWER ME. (NKJV)

Sticky Situation at the Grocery Store (Friday)

Read: 1 JOHN 1:5-10

This time I've really done it, Juliana thought. Just moments before, she had been shopping for groceries with her stepmother. She had helped put cheese and bananas in the cart. Then, at the checkout line, she spotted the racks of bubble gum and candy bars for sale. Glancing around to be sure nobody noticed her, Juliana snatched a bright pink pack of gum. She hid it under her shirt as she and her stepmom crossed the parking lot to their minivan.

"What's that under your shirt, honey?" Maria, Juliana's stepmother, asked as she loaded groceries into the van.

Juliana kicked halfheartedly at a pebble. Guilty feelings started to fill up her belly. Slowly, she extended her hand, revealing the stolen gum.

"Oh, baby girl," Maria said sadly. "Here." She reached for the gum. "Wait here."

Juliana climbed into the van to wait while her stepmom returned to the store. Moments later, Maria joined Juliana in the van and took hold of her hand.

"I talked to the store manager. If you come inside, you can apologize and talk about what you can do to fix it."

Juliana nodded. The sick feeling in her stomach grew. "I'm sorry, Maria. I don't know why I took it, except..."

"Except what?" Maria prompted.

Juliana sighed. She liked Maria, but she still wasn't sure she wanted her dad to be married to her. Still, she wanted her stepmother to understand. "Sometimes, when I say I want something, nobody listens. Even when it's important," Juliana explained. "And sometimes you want things more important than bubble gum, right?" Maria asked.

Juliana sniffed. "I know it was wrong. I'll go in and say I'm sorry for stealing the gum."

"That's the right thing to do. You can also tell Jesus you're sorry. He already knows what you did, and why you did it."

"Then He knows more than I do," Juliana said. "And He wants to help you," said Maria. "He loves you so much--enough to pay for your sins on the cross."

Juliana opened the van door. She turned back to look at Maria. "Will you come with me?"

"Of course, honey."

"Good," said Juliana. "That's really what I want." ALLISON WILSON LEE

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you ever make a choice to do something and then later regret it? The Bible tells us we all sin. In Christ, we have complete forgiveness from God. We can confess anything we’ve done wrong, knowing Jesus has already paid for our sins and will forgive us. He made the way for us to have a relationship with Him and is always there to help us.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:  1 JOHN 1:9 (KJV)

IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST AND WILL FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND PURIFY US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. (NIV)
