Price of Freedom (Monday)

Read: 1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-28

On Memorial Day, Tyler glanced around the cemetery. "Look at all the flags waving in the breeze," he said, handing Dad the pots of flowers they had brought.

"Dad, why do only some of the graves have flags flying beside them?" Nicole asked. She pointed to a special section of the cemetery. "All those over there have them."

"Those are graves of men and women who served in our country's armed forces. Many of them gave their lives to protect our freedom," Dad explained. "Some towns have special services and parades to honor them."

"They paid a big price to keep us free, didn't they?" Tyler asked thoughtfully.

"Yes, they certainly did," said Dad, placing the flowers on his parents' graves. As they turned to leave, he added, "Someone else paid an even greater price for our freedom."

"A greater price than dying?" asked Nicole. "Who did that?"

"I know who it was! Jesus," said Tyler. "Right, Dad?"

Dad nodded. "When Jesus died on the cross for us, He bore not only the pain of physical death, but also the punishment for our sin. That's a price that's really beyond our understanding. Jesus did that because He loves us. If we trust in Him, we don't have to suffer the punishment we deserve."

"But there's no grave to decorate for Him," observed Nicole.

"That's because He rose again," Tyler said. "He's alive in heaven!"

"Yes, He is," Dad replied with a smile. "When the price for sin was fully paid, Jesus rose from the dead, so there's no grave to decorate for Him. There is a special way we remember His sacrifice though."

"There is?" asked Tyler. "What is it?"

"The communion service at church," said Dad. "It's a way of remembering Christ's sacrifice on the cross, and it also shows that we're looking forward to His return. When He comes back, He'll rid the world of sin and death, and those who know Him will live with Him forever."

"There won't be any graves to decorate then!" said Nicole.

"No, there won't," said Dad, "because Jesus will raise Christians who have died back to life! Until then, we need to remember the great sacrifice He made to save us."

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Does your church hold communion services? When you have such a service, take a moment to thank Jesus for the sacrifice He made so you could be saved and not have to suffer the punishment for your sin. Thank Him for loving you so much. Remember that He’s alive and will someday come back, and all those who trust in Him will live with Him forever.

New Adventures (Tuesday)

Read: DEUTERONOMY 31:1-6

Hannah's pet ferret, Sam, stepped carefully through the grass. It was his first time walking outside on the new leash Hannah had just bought at the pet store. The fur on his tail was all puffed up, a sign that he was excited or scared.

"It's all right, Sam," Hannah said. She picked up the ferret and hugged him close. "I know it's big and scary, but I'm here. I love you, and I'd never let anything happen to you."

"Hannah!" her mother called from the house a while later. "Come inside now. You need to finish packing for Bible camp."

Hannah scooped up Sam and carried him inside. Her mother handed her a stack of shirts, which Hannah placed in her duffel bag with a frown. Even the sight of the mischievous ferret stealing a flop-flop from her bag wasn't quite enough to make her smile.

"What's wrong?" Mom asked, concerned. "Aren't you excited for camp?"

Hannah shook her head. "Everyone says camp will be fun, but I don't know. What if I get homesick, or I don't feel well? What if nobody wants to be my friend?"

Mom smiled. "I think you're feeling like Sam did about playing outside for the first time. The yard seemed so big and new to him."

Hannah nodded. "Just like camp does to me."

"I think Jesus wants you to remember exactly what you told Sam. He understands that it's frightening to try something new, but He will be with you and take care of you each step of the way. He wants to reassure you of His love and faithfulness so you don't feel afraid." Mom reached over the packed bag to give Hannah a hug. "Trust Him to be with you in this new adventure and bring good things from it--like meeting new friends who will help you grow in your faith."

Hannah smiled. "Thanks, Mom. It makes me feel better about going to camp when I remember that Jesus loves me so much and will take care of me."

They heard a scratching sound and glanced over to see Sam pawing at the door, eager to get out and explore some more. Mom grinned. "It looks like Sam's not so scared anymore either!" JESSICA KLEEBERGER

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are there times when you don’t know what to expect? Maybe you’re moving to a new place, going to camp like Hannah, attending a different church or school, or talking to a friend about Jesus. No matter how new or scary your situation is, Jesus is always with you! He will take care of you and give you strength and courage in your new adventure.

The Yard Sale (Wednesday)

Read: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20; 1 PETER 1:18-21

"Wow! What a lot of people!" Ross exclaimed. He and his sister Stephanie surveyed the scene before them. People were looking at the variety of items arranged on tables along the driveway and on the lawn. Mom sat near the garage with her money box. "I guess yard sales are a big thing."

"They sure are," said Stephanie. "Hey, Ross! Remember the race car you made for the derby last year? It's already sold."

"Sold!" Ross frowned. "I didn't want to sell my race car!"

Stephanie's eyes widened. "You didn't?"

"No!" said Ross. "I spent hours on that car! I can't believe Mom sold it."

"She told us to go through the boxes to make sure there was nothing we wanted to keep," said Stephanie.

"Yeah, I know," Ross said, sighing. "I just forgot."

"I know who bought the racecar," said Stephanie. "It was Mrs. Barker. She lives down the street--and do you know what she does with the stuff she buys?" Stephanie didn't wait for an answer. "She has yard sales of her own and resells things at higher prices! She'll probably sell your car that way."

Stephanie was right. The very next Saturday there was a huge yard sale at Mrs. Barker's house. Ross could barely contain his excitement when he found his race car there. When he explained the situation to see if Mrs. Barker would just give him the car back, she shook her head. "I bought it fair and square," she said. She wouldn't budge on the price either, so Ross finally took some money from his pocket. "Eight dollars," he grumbled as he handed the bills to Mrs. Barker.

"I got my car back," Ross said when he got home. "I made it, and I bought it--for eight whole dollars!"

Dad looked up and smiled. "That's just like what God has done for us," he said. "He created us, so we belonged to Him. But then..."

"We sinned, and the punishment is eternal death and separation from God forever," Ross replied. "To save us from death, God bought us back."

"Yes, He did--at an unbelievable price," said Dad. "It took the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son."

Ross nodded. "Eight dollars is nothing compared to that." KAREN R. LOCKLEAR

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Did you know that God made you and wants you to live with Him forever? But your sin separates you from Him, so He paid a great price to pay the penalty for your sin and buy you back. Jesus, God’s Son, loves you so much He died to give you eternal life. When you trust Him to save you, you belong to Him forever. Before It's Too Late (Thursday)

Read: JOHN 15:9-17

When Reagan arrived home from school, her mother was standing on a stepladder, changing a light bulb in the hallway. "I have a new appreciation for light bulbs," said Mom with a grin. "Until this one burned out, I didn't realize how dark this hallway could be."

Reagan sighed as she put down her books. "Anna's grandma died yesterday," she said soberly.

"Oh, I'm sorry," said Mom. "Anna must feel very sad."

"She does--especially because it's been a long time since they went to see her grandma, and now it's too late." Tears welled up in Reagan's eyes. "Someday my grandma will die too."

Mom put an arm around her. "We miss our loved ones when they leave us, but since Grandma knows Jesus, we know we'll see her again someday."

"I know, but..." Reagan paused. "I don't want to feel sorry I didn't spend more time with Grandma. I know she loves it when I come over to play board games with her, and I want to do that more often. I've just been so busy lately."

Mom nodded. "It's easy to take things--and people--for granted," she said, holding up the burned out light bulb. "We often don't realize how much they mean to us until they're not there anymore. But when we remember how important people are to Jesus and that our loved ones are a gift from Him, it will help us show them our love and appreciation."

Reagan nodded. "Well, I'm not going to treat people like light bulbs anymore," she said.

As she spoke, Reagan's little sister came into the room. "Treat people like light bulbs?" Julia asked. "How would you do that?"

"By taking them for granted, and I'm not going to do that anymore," declared Reagan. "I'm going to spend more time with my family."

Mom smiled. "You'll never be sorry for that decision."

"Does that mean you'll play tea party with me?" asked Julia hopefully.

"Not now. I want to--" Reagan clapped a hand over her mouth. "I mean--okay, I'll play with you, Julia. But first I want to call Grandma and tell her I'll be there on Saturday to play a game with her. Okay, Mom?"

"Okay!" said Mom. "Tell her we'll all come." KAREN E. COGAN

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you show your love and appreciation for the family and friends God has given you? Don’t take them for granted. Take a few minutes to think of ways to show your love for your grandparents, parents, siblings, and friends. They are special gifts from God, and He put them in your life so you can show His love to one another.

The Unused Gift (Friday)

Read: JOHN 14:26-27; 2 THESSALONIANS 2:16-17; 2 TIMOTHY 3:14-17

"Mom, can we go out to eat today?" Cameron pleaded. "We haven't gone out in a while."

Mom sighed and gave her son a tiny smile. "Sorry, honey, we just don't have the money for that right now."

"Hey, did we ever use that gift card Grandma gave us last year?" Cameron asked.

"You know, I'm not sure...let me check." Mom grabbed her purse and started rummaging through the contents. "Here it is!" Mom held up the gift card triumphantly. "Good thinking, Cameron! I forgot all about this."

"Pastor Steve helped me think of it," Cameron said with a grin. "In his sermon at church yesterday, he was talking about how God has given us so many good things as His children. Sometimes we forget to use what He gives us--just like a gift card that has already been paid for."

"I like that correlation!" Mom mused. "Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin. When we trust Him as our Savior, He gives us new life and everything we need to live a life that points to Him."

"Right," said Cameron. "He promises to help us through everything we face in our lives now."

Mom nodded. "I'm so thankful God never leaves us alone. He gives us His love, strength, and encouragement. What are some other things God gives us that provide us with what we need, Cameron?"

"Well, He gives us His Holy Spirit to always be with us and remind us of what we know to be true...like everything in the Bible."

"Absolutely!" said Mom. "His Spirit teaches us and reminds us of what God's Word says. The Bible is living and active; it tells us the truth of what Jesus has done for us and how to live as His children. When we face difficult situations, we need to remember the truth of God's Word and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us as we navigate through life."

"Speaking of navigate..." Cameron gave Mom a sly smile. "I just plugged the restaurant into the navigation on your phone. Let's use what we've been given!" SAVANNAH COLEMAN

HOW ABOUT YOU?

If you know Jesus as your Savior, do you take advantage of all the good things He’s given you because you’re His child? Along with forgiveness for sin and eternal life, He’s also given us everything we need to live our lives now. He gives us the Holy Spirit, who provides us with His love, His truth, and His presence. Open up His Word for encouragement and rely on the strength He offers each day.
