When You Pray (Monday)

Read: PSALM 145:17-19

"Levi?" Mom stood at the door. "Levi!" she said again, but he didn't look up from his computer until she walked over and turned the music down.

"Oh, hi, Mom," said Levi. "I didn't hear you come in."

Mom nodded. "I just noticed Mrs. Grady struggling out there with her lawn mower. Maybe you could help her with it."

"Right now? I'm trying to think of how to earn my last club badge." Levi pointed to his laptop. "It says here it has to be some kind of service to someone in need."

As Levi scrolled around the screen, his younger brother raced into the room. "Levi, my bike is broken. Can you help me fix it?"

"Later, Nash" said Levi. "I have a project I need to work on right now." Nash sighed and left the room. "This is the hardest badge of all to earn," Levi said. "I don't know any needy people--someone who's sick or poor or anything like that."

Mom smiled. "You know, I think you need to turn down more than just the music if you want earn this badge."

Levi frowned. "What do you mean?"

"You don't hear the calls for help because..." Mom reached out and took the computer from his lap, "this is making as much noise as that music." She put the computer on the desk. "Have you asked God for ideas?"

"Yeah, I have," Levi answered. "I asked Jesus to show me who I could help--not only because I need to earn my badge, but because I know He loves people and wants me to help them."

"Okay," said Mom. "Now come look here." She led Levi to the window. He could see Mrs. Grady struggling with the lawn mower, and

Nash was hunched over his bicycle. "It's great you asked for God's help, but you have to turn down the noise and pay attention if you want to hear His answer," Mom said. "I think I see two answers to your prayers. What do you think?"

"I think..." Levi began slowly. "I think I see two people who need my help--two needy people. And I have a badge to earn." Levi grinned and reached for his tennis shoes. HEATHER M. TEKAVEC

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you look and listen for God’s answers when you pray? Or do you only look for the answer you want? God may not answer your prayer in the way you have in mind. He may want you to deal with the situation in a way you’re not expecting. Pay attention to how He leads you, and be open to whatever answer He gives you.

Getting Bumped (Tuesday)

Read: MATTHEW 12:34-37

"You jerk!" yelled Adrian. "You spilled your orange juice on my art project, Isaac. Now I'll have to do it all over again." Adrian snatched up his paper. "I wish you weren't my brother!"

"I'm sorry," Isaac said, tears filling his eyes.

"Hey!" Adrian's voice got louder. "That's not orange juice. It's orange soda! How come you got orange soda and I didn't?"

Hurrying into the kitchen, Mom confronted her angry son. "Adrian, you know better than to call your brother names," she said sternly.

"Well, Isaac messed up my art project," said Adrian. "Besides, how come he got soda and I got orange juice? The glasses looked the same."

"There was one glass of orange soda left over from his birthday party yesterday," said Mom, "so I said he could have it. But you're right--they looked the same. You didn't notice what was inside the glass until it got bumped. Just like we didn't notice what was inside you until you got bumped."

Adrian shook his head. "Isaac didn't bump me. He bumped his glass, and it spilled all over my art project."

"I know," said Mom, "but when something happens to mess up our plans or efforts, it's like a bump that pushes us off course."

Adrian looked confused. "What do you mean?" he asked.

"When things don't go our way, whatever is inside our hearts spills out. If our hearts are filled with patience and kindness, gentle words come out. But if we harbor bad attitudes or anger, harsh words spill out instead." Mom raised her eyebrows. "Isaac spilled punch, but you spilled harsh words. Which one is worse?"

Adrian looked at the floor. Then he turned to his brother. "I'm sorry I got mad at you and called you a mean name," he said. "Will you forgive me?"

Isaac nodded happily. "I can help you with your art project if you want." "Okay!" Adrian said. "But first I think I should ask Jesus to forgive me too." Mom nodded. "He will--and He'll also help you remember that He's filled your heart with His love so it can spill over onto others through your words." LINDA R. STAI

HOW ABOUT YOU?

What comes out when you get bumped—when things don’t go right for you? If you have a selfish, impatient attitude, confess it to Jesus. Remember that He’s filled your heart with patience, kindness, and understanding—the kind of love He has for each of us. Then when you get bumped, trust Him to help you let others see His love coming out from within you.

Christ our food and salvation (Wednesday)

Read: John 6:47-58

Julie's stomach grumbled. It felt like it had been ages since she'd had a bite of food. "Mom, can I have a snack?" she called out.

"You just ate lunch. Why do you need a snack?" Mom called back from the dining room where she was cleaning.

"That was hours ago!" Julie said. "I'm hungry again."

"All right, you can have some fruit snacks. They're in the pantry."

Julie hopped up and flew over to the pantry. She grabbed two bags of fruit snacks and went back to the couch.

"One bag, please, Julie," Mom called from the dining room.

"How did you know?" Julie called back, returning a fruit snack package to the pantry.

"Moms have their ways," Mom replied.

At dinner, Julie wolfed her food down quickly, then helped herself to seconds.

"You must be hungry, Julie," Dad said, eyeing her.

"You should have seen her earlier today," said Mom.

"I'll die without food!" Julie replied.

Dad chuckled. "You're right. None of us can live without food. You know, that reminds me of the meal we had at church on Sunday."

Julie furrowed her brows. "We didn't eat lunch at church this week."

"I'm not talking about lunch--I'm talking about Jesus!" Dad said. Now Julie looked even more confused. "Without Him, we would perish, just like we would die without earthly food," Dad went on. "Jesus is our spiritual food. He feeds us and nourishes us, and we rely on Him for our salvation."

"And...going to church is like eating?" Julie asked, still not quite sure she understood.

Dad nodded. "It's one of the ways He feeds our souls--through the truth of the Bible and the love of other Christians. And there's also a special meal of bread and juice we enjoy together at church."

"Oh, you mean communion," said Julie.

"Right," Dad said. "Communion reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made to save us and how we need His love and forgiveness every day, just like we need food. We need to go to Him continually so He can nourish us."

Julie put down her fork. "I'm finally feeling full," she said. "But I could use some spiritual food. Dad, why don't you get your Bible and read us a story?"

Dad smiled. "I'd be glad to." Caly Groves

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you often get hungry and want something to eat? You probably do! We all need food to survive and eat it every day. Do you know that you need Jesus every day too? You need Him to nourish you spiritually with His grace and love. He often does that when you pray, read His Word, and worship Him with other Christians. Let Him feed your soul every day.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: John 6:35 (KJV)

Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.” (NLT)

The Sacrifice (Thursday)

Read: Romans 5:6-10

"What's the matter, Kinsley?" Mom asked, surprised to see her youngest child in tears in front of the television.

"A bear killed the girl's dog," Kinsley sobbed.

Mom put an arm around her. "Oh, honey, it's just a movie. It didn't really happen."

Kinsley sniffed. "But it was so sad! It was a story about a girl named Mia. When she got in trouble for disobeying her parents, she decided to run away. She took her dog, Tucker, and went deep into the woods. As they were walking along the path, an angry bear charged out at them. Mia tried to get away, but the bear was too fast. It almost caught her, but then Tucker rushed over and attacked it. Then the bear went after Tucker and...and killed him!" Kinsley started crying again. "If only Mia hadn't gone off alone in the woods! Then that wouldn't have happened."

Mom gave Kinsley a hug. "What a sad story with a sad ending. Mia ran away from home, and Tucker sacrificed his life for her--the dog loved her that much." She wiped a tear from Kinsley's cheek. "Did you know that, a long time ago, someone died for us? Only His story has a happy ending."

Kinsley looked at her mother. "Really? What happened?"

"We disobeyed God and ran away from Him, and Satan, like a vicious bear, wants to destroy each of us. But Jesus gave His life to save us--He loves us that much," Mom explained.

Kinsley sat quietly thinking. She had heard the story of Jesus many times. "Jesus died, but He came back to life, didn't He? He's not dead anymore. He's alive."

"That's right," said Mom. "Jesus took the punishment for our sin--all the ways we've disobeyed God. Then He rose from the dead, and now He lives in heaven. Everyone who trusts Him as their Savior will live with Him forever."

Kinsley smiled. "Jesus really loves us a lot, doesn't He?"

"He sure does," said Mom. "Tucker saved Mia's life in that movie, but Jesus sacrificed His life to save us for all eternity." Patricia C. Singletary

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you understand the wonderful sacrifice Jesus made for you? Like everyone else, you are a sinner who has disobeyed God, but Jesus loves you so much He died to take the punishment for your sins. Trust in Him today and accept the gift of salvation and eternal life God offers you. (To learn more, click the "Good News!" button in the right column of this page.)

Still Joyful (Friday)

Read: Philippians 4:4-9; 1 Peter 2:21-25

"When are we going to buy an electric ice cream maker?" Ryan asked as he and Dad took turns cranking their old one.

Dad grinned. "Not until Old Faithful here quits doing its job. To me, all this work is part of making ice cream."

As Ryan took a turn at the crank, he remembered remarks made by one of the boys at school. "Dad, when you were a kid, were you ever laughed at for being a Christian?"

"Sometimes," replied Dad. "But as a kid, I was laughed at for lots of reasons. I didn't have many friends, and I was better at math than at sports, so other kids made fun of me. At least when I was teased for being a Christian it felt like a worthy cause--even though it still hurt." Dad paused, then added, "My father used to remind me that the Bible tells us to rejoice in persecution."

"You mean--be glad?" asked Ryan. "Even when kids laugh at me?"

Dad nodded. "It doesn't mean you should be glad they're being unkind to you. It means that real joy doesn't depend on what others think of us, but what God thinks of us--and He loves us more than we can imagine. So much that He sent His Son to die for us so we could be saved."

"But feeling joyful when others are teasing you is hard to do," Ryan said. "Even harder than turning this crank."

"Yes," said Dad as he took the crank from Ryan, "but Jesus is always there to help us, even in difficult times, and we can be joyful about that. He was rejected by others when He died on the cross, and He tells us we'll be rejected by others too. But He was willing to suffer and die so we could have eternal life with Him. Knowing that is what brings us joy when we're faced with persecution."

Dad stopped turning the crank. "It's kind of like this ice cream. Knowing how good it will be helps us crank it." He grabbed a couple spoons. "And I think it's finally time to taste it," he said, handing one to Ryan.

Ryan put a spoonful of ice cream into his mouth. "Wow! That's good." Barbara J. Westberg

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you a joyful Christian? Maybe you’re dealing with something like sickness, grief, or even persecution that makes it hard to feel joyful. Those are difficult situations—ones you may need to talk to an adult about so they can help—but you can still be joyful, even in times like that. As you look to Jesus and remember His promises, He will fill you with His joy, even in difficult times.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:  Psalm 51:12 (KJV)

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. (NKJV)
