Who Do You Love? (Monday)

Read: Matthew 22:37-40

"Look, Grandma! Bunny clouds!" declared four-year-old Taya. "They're shaped like bunnies." Zander and Grandma shared a smile in the rearview mirror. Taya kept a rabbit at her grandma's house, and she seemed to eat, sleep, and breathe rabbits.

As Grandma got dinner ready that evening, Zander grabbed his tablet and sat down to scroll through pictures of dirt bikes and dream about the one he was saving for. Taya went outside to feed Patches, the rabbit. Grandma stood at the sink, snapping peas and singing hymns.

"Taya has Patches in her lap--she's probably telling him a story," Grandma said after a minute. "She's such a little girl to be so loving and faithful to a pet. It reminds me, in a small way, of God's love and faithfulness to us."

Without thinking, Zander said, "You're as bad as Taya, Grandma. She's always talking about rabbits, and you're always talking about God!" He clapped a hand over his mouth, wondering if she'd be upset.

Grandma laughed. "I guess you're right. Whatever you love will be on your mind. Jesus has my heart, so I can't help but think about and praise Him."

Grandma often told Zander Jesus loved him, but he hadn't really thought much about it. Right now, he just wanted a dirt bike! But Grandma's words made him wonder. "Is it wrong for me to think about anything besides God?" Zander asked.

"No." Grandma sat down beside Zander. "We all have different things we think about each day, and God has given us natural interests and abilities. I love to grow flowers; Taya loves Patches. We can find joy in these things. But Jesus wants our hearts. He loves us and died for us, and when we love Him in return, it changes the way we think about everything." Grandma put an arm around Zander's shoulders. "Who--or what--holds your heart, Zander?"

"I...I don't know," said Zander. Does a bike have my heart? he wondered. It sounded silly to even think it. Right then he knew he didn't want it to be a bike. "I want Jesus to have my heart," he said. "Will you help me talk to Him?" Lisa Nagel

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Who or what has your heart—your love? It’s okay to be interested in different things, but Jesus wants your heart. He died and rose again to save you, and He loves you so much. When you love Him in return, He helps you see that He’s more important than anything else. Give Him your heart by trusting in Him.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Matthew 22:37 (KJV)

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

Hot Flames (Tuesday)

Read: Matthew 21:12-17

Ava stomped off the bus and to the front door where her mom was waiting.

"I hate Mrs. Larson!"

"You hate her?" Mom asked as she opened the front door. "Those are some strong words. What happened?"

"Well, I forgot to do my homework, so Mrs. Larson took points away from the whole class and we couldn't watch a movie today because we didn't have enough behavior points. Then everyone was mad at me! I wish she would get hit by a bus!"

Her mom gave her a stern look, but then changed the subject. "Ava, come into the kitchen with me." Mom walked over to the gas stove and turned on the flame. "Do you remember when we cooked together last week?"

"Of course! We made pasta on the stove, and it was so good!"

"Do you remember what I said about being careful around the gas stove?"

Ava thought for a moment. "You said I had to be careful--that fire was good for cooking, but it was also dangerous."

"Yes. I think your feelings right now are a bit like the stove."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, anger can be used for good--that's called righteous anger. Like when you got angry that your friend Marissa was being bullied. Righteous anger is like how we used the fire to boil the water--it helps us identify things that are wrong and make them right. The anger Jesus felt when he saw money changers taking advantage of people in God's temple was righteous anger. But anger can also be bad. This is anger that turns into feelings of hatred and bitterness. That would be like if I touched the fire with my bare hands. Jesus tells us to love, not hate. He reminds us that He forgave us for our sins and helps us love others, even when we feel angry at them."

Ava was quiet for a moment. "I think I got angry because I was embarrassed," she said. "I blamed Mrs. Larson, but really it was me who didn't do my homework. I don't actually want her to get hit by a bus--that would be terrible! Who would teach us science?"

"I'm glad you don't hate your teacher," said Mom. "Now, how about we make some pasta?" Naomi Vroegop

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Is there someone you’re angry with? Is it because of how they treated you or others? Even if you have a good reason to be angry at them, anger can be dangerous. Don’t let your anger turn to feelings of bitterness or hatred. Talk to Jesus about how you feel. Then trust Him to help you forgive that person and show them His love.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Ephesians 5:2 (KJV)

Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (NIV)

Follow Your Heart…Maybe Not (Wednesday)

Read: Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 53:6; Hebrews 8:10

"Let's see the animals!" Kaylee was excited to spend the weekend at Emma's house. She only had a Chihuahua at her family's apartment.

"Okay, hold on!" Emma said, laughing.

The girls skipped along the path, serenading the goats and pigs as they passed their pens. They had just finished a movie about a girl who followed her dream to become a famous singer.

"You can do anything you want, be anyone you want, and be a star...if you only follow your heart!" the girls sang loudly as they danced and spun around the hay bales.

"Wait!" Emma raced to the sheep pen. "Oh no! The gate is open!" She quickly counted the sheep, then glanced around the pen. "Fluffy is gone!"

After Emma closed the gate, the girls raced around the farm to find Fluffy. Suddenly, they heard a loud horn from the main road. To their dismay, Fluffy was standing right at the edge of the busy highway.

"Fluffy!" Emma and Kaylee walked quietly so they wouldn't startle the frightened animal. Gently, Emma guided the trembling lamb back to safety.

"Wow, that was crazy," said Kaylee breathlessly.

"Yeah, sheep aren't that bright. They don't always make the wisest choices. That's why they need us to help them," explained Emma.

"Sounds like our Sunday school lesson from last week. Remember?" Kaylee said thoughtfully. "Jesus calls us His sheep because we often get led astray. We can easily make wrong choices if we don't look to Him for guidance."

"Yeah, and we know how much God wants to help us. Just think about how He sent His only Son to die for our sins. Now that's being a Good Shepherd!"

As she brushed Fluffy's soft wool, Emma began to hum the movie's theme song.

Kaylee joined in, singing, "You can be a star, if you only follow your--" She stopped abruptly. "You know, Emma, the words of that song aren't really true. The Bible says we can't trust our hearts unless they've been changed by Jesus. We need to follow Him and trust Him to guide us as our Good Shepherd."

"You got that right!" Emma smiled as she hugged her wooly friend. "We don't want to walk a dangerous road like Fluffy!" Emily Rudolph

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever heard someone say, “Follow your heart”? Maybe you’ve seen that message on a T-shirt or heard it in a movie. It may sound nice, but in practice following your heart will lead you astray if done apart from God. Instead, look to Jesus for guidance and trust Him to put His desires in your heart. He tells us in John 10:11, “I am the Good Shepherd.” Follow Him.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 2 Timothy 2:22 (KJV)

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (NIV)

Treasures in Heaven (Thursday)

Read: Malachi 3:10; Matthew 6:19-24; Colossians 3:1-10

Trevor and Tracie had coins lined up all over the living room floor when Mom walked out of the kitchen with her coffee. "Wow, that's a lot of coins you two have accumulated!" Mom remarked as she sat down at the table.

"I almost have all the state coins!" Trevor said with a grin.

"Do you have Michigan yet?" Tracie asked, holding up a quarter.

"Trade me!" Trevor begged. "I need that one!"

"Kids, seeing your coin collection reminds me that today is the last day to bring in money for the kids' food program at church," Mom said. "Did you both remember to set aside any money for the kids in our community who are in need?"

"Mom, I just don't have any to spare!" Trevor moaned.

"Yeah, and besides, we're going there later this week to help pack lunches for the kids, and you already bought some food to bring with us," Tracie added.

Mom took a sip of her coffee. "Let me tell you something I learned when I was your age. God is honored when we give Him our time, talent, and treasure. That should be easy to remember since your names both start with T."

"We're serving with our time by going to help pack the kids' lunches, and we're super-fast at it, so I guess that's talent!" Tracie said with a giggle.

Trevor stared at his line of coins. "I guess I've been forgetting to give to God out of my treasure."

"Sometimes I forget too," Mom responded. "Then I remember a verse in Matthew that says, Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven...for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.' That verse reminds me that, because Jesus has saved me and given me eternal life, I'm rich! Instead of trying to hold on to earthly treasures, I need to focus on my heavenly treasure by remembering His love and sharing it with others. That's the kind of treasure that really counts."

Trevor jumped up. "Well, I'm going to keep my coin collection, but I do have some dollar bills that would help these kids out."

"Me too!" Tracie said. "We may have a treasury of coins here on earth, but we have an even better treasure in heaven with Jesus!" Savannah Coleman

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you focused on the treasure Jesus died and rose again to give you? Or are you more focused on the treasures you have—or don’t have—here on earth? It can be hard to focus on eternal things when we’re surrounded by the things of this world, but eternal treasure is the only treasure that lasts. Store your treasure in heaven by turning your focus to Him and showing others His love.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Matthew 6:20-21 (KJV)

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV)

Not So Different (Friday)

Read: 3 John 5-8

"Hey," Chase greeted Ariana as she came up the driveway after school. "Mom invited a girl--a missionary kid--to come for supper and go with us to the school talent show tonight. Her name's Lauren, and her family lives in Africa. They're visiting Pastor Burns this week, and Mom thought Lauren would like to meet some kids her own age."

"Oh, great," said Ariana, rolling her eyes. "She probably wears funny clothes and doesn't have the slightest idea how she's supposed to act here. And all the kids at school will see me with her. How embarrassing!"

"Oh, come on, Ariana," said Chase. "You can be so silly!" He left to go shoot hoops with a friend across the street.

Frowning, Ariana went into the house, where her mother repeated what Chase had told her. "But, Mom!" said Ariana. "What will I talk about with a strange girl from a strange place?"

"Don't worry about it, honey," said Mom. "She's just an ordinary girl like you." Ariana doubted that.

When Lauren arrived, Ariana had to admit that her clothes didn't look different. In fact, they looked pretty cool! And she didn't act different either. When Mom explained that they'd be eating at a fast-food place before the talent show, Lauren smiled. "That's my favorite. There's one of those in Nairobi, and every once in a while we get to go there."

While they were eating, Mom and Dad asked Lauren about her school and her life in Africa. Soon Ariana found herself eagerly joining in. It was fun to hear about a new place and another way of living.

"That was fun," Ariana said after they dropped Lauren off. "Lauren and I are going to stay in touch after she goes back to Africa!"

"That's great!" said Mom. "I'm glad you two connected. But even if you didn't have so much in common, you're still sisters in Christ because you both know Him as your Savior. Jesus unites us with all Christians, which is why we need to be kind and welcoming to them, no matter where they're from or how different from us they may be."

"Yeah, I guess you're right," said Ariana. "I'll remember that the next time we have missionaries come to visit!" Linda M. Weddle

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you kind and welcoming to people who are different from you? You may be surprised to find they’re not so different from you after all! But no matter how similar or different they may be, Jesus wants you to show them kindness—especially if they know Him as their Savior too. Instead of focusing on your differences, learn from each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Galatians 6:10 (KJV)

As we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
