Coals of Fire
Lucinda's mom was laying logs in the fireplace, but she turned around when she heard the door rattle as it slammed shut. Lucinda sank down onto the couch.
Mom sat down next to her. "What happened?"
"Jacob called me a blabbermouth. I don't even want to go back to school," Lucinda said as tears slid down her cheeks.
Mom got her a tissue. "I'm so sorry, honey. I wonder why he likes to pick on you so much."
"He always thinks I'm going to tell on him because of that one time I told Mrs. Benton he was the one who put the frog in her desk. But that was two years ago!" Lucinda wiped her eyes and blew her nose.
Mom went to the fireplace and lit the fire. "What do you think you should do about it?"
Lucinda sighed. "I don't know. I wish there were some way to make him stop."
"Well, I'm glad you told me. It's important to tell adults about problems like this so they can help." As the fire began to crackle, Mom turned and said, "Maybe Jacob could use some coals of fire on his head."
"Mom!" Lucinda exclaimed. "I'm not that mad at him."
Mom grinned. "I don't mean real burning coals. I'm talking about a verse in the Bible." She picked up her Bible from the coffee table and turned to Romans 12:20. "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.' I think it means that by treating your enemy kindly and returning good for evil, you may give him a burning desire to change his ways."
"Are you saying that I should do something nice for Jacob? That's going to be really hard," Lucinda said, doubtful.
"I know, but remember that Jesus will help you love others the way He loves you. Trust Him to help you show Jacob kindness, even when he's mean."
"Okay," said Lucinda. "Maybe I can bring him a candy bar for his snack tomorrow."
Mom nodded. "That sounds like a great way to start." Mary Rozendal
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you ever been picked on by someone? Do you get frustrated when people call you names or are mean to you? Even though it’s not easy, Jesus wants you to show others His love when they treat you badly. Instead of being mean back, do something kind for them. When you show others the kindness Jesus has shown you, you help them see how much He loves them. If someone is bullying you or hurting you, tell a trusted adult so they can help.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Matthew 5:44 (KJV)
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (KJV)
