Hear the Knock
"Mom, it's so cold in here!" Carson said as he pulled on a sweater. "When is the furnace repairman supposed to come?"
"They said he could be here in the next couple of hours," Mom said. "Why don't we go curl up under blankets and watch a movie while we wait?"
Carson got a warm blanket and found a spot on the couch. "Can we put the surround sound on?" he asked.
Mom nodded, and Carson grabbed the remote and pushed the buttons. Soon the whole room was filled with the sounds of the movie, and Carson got so into it he forgot he was cold. When the movie ended, he felt even colder than before. "Shouldn't the furnace guy have been here by now?" he asked. "It's so cold in here, my nose is frozen!"
Mom got up and opened the front door. "Oh no!" she said as she took a sorry-we-missed-you tag off the doorknob. "He was already here. We must not have heard him knock over the movie." She quickly got her cell phone and called the repairman again. "Well, the good news is he's only a couple miles away repairing someone else's furnace," she told Carson a few minutes later. "He'll come back here after he finishes that job. He said he knocked on our door several times, but we didn't answer, so he left."
Carson sighed and grabbed another blanket. "This reminds me of a song we sing in church with a part that goes, Behold, I stand at the door and knock.'"
Mom nodded. "That song is based on a verse in Revelation where Jesus talks about how He knocks on our heart's door when we hear the truth of His words. If we let Him in, we'll be able to enjoy a close relationship with Him as our Savior. But just like the movie distracted us from hearing the repairman's knock, we might get distracted by the things we see and hear around us. We might think money or success is all that's important, or that we can take care of ourselves."
"That's a knock I definitely don't want to miss," Carson said. Just then there was a knock at the front door, and he ran to get it. Melissa Yeagle
