Dark Days (Monday)

Read: 2 Kings 6:11-18; Psalm 135:5-6

"Are you reading the comics page, Grandpa?" asked Rowan as he came into the living room. "Or can I have it?"

"You want the comics page?" asked Grandpa, pretending to be surprised. "Are you sure you don't want to read the front page news?"

Rowan shook his head. "That's just all bad news. War, earthquakes, crime--all kinds of scary things going on in the world. I'd rather read the comics."

"I guess that's understandable," said Grandpa. "Things do look pretty bleak in this sinful world, but we need to remember that God is still in control. Jesus is coming back one day, and when He does, He's going to destroy Satan and sin forever, and the world will no longer be a scary place. Instead, He will make it new and beautiful."

"Yeah, I know," said Rowan, "but Satan seems pretty powerful to me!"

"Satan is powerful," agreed Grandpa, "but not as powerful as God. Do you remember the story of the prophet Elisha's servant?"

"I think so," Rowan said. "You mean the time a whole bunch of soldiers were about to attack Elisha, and his servant was so scared?"

"That's the one," said Grandpa. "The servant was really frightened--until God opened his eyes so he could see the large number of angels God had sent to guard them."

"I remember," said Rowan. "The servant was sure all those soldiers would overpower them, but like you said, God was in control."

"Right," said Grandpa. "Sometimes we can be like that servant. When we see all the scary, evil things happening around us, it can seem like the world is out of control and that there's no hope. But God is always in control, and nothing happens unless He permits it. When things look dark to you, remember that Jesus will make everything right one day, and because He's always with us, we don't need to be afraid. We can trust Him no matter what happens."

"Okay, Grandpa," said Rowan. He grinned. "Now, can I have those comics, please?" Sherry L. Kuyt

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do things like hunger, disease, and crime upset you? Do reports of wars, floods, and earthquakes make you worry about the future? You shouldn’t close your eyes to the problems in the world, but you should also open your eyes to the power and promises of Jesus. He won’t ever leave you alone in this scary world. He’s still in control, and His victory is certain.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:  Psalm 135:6 (KJV)

The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. (NIV)

Living in Harmony (Tuesday)

Read: John 17:20-23; Romans 12:10, 16-18

Tyrone blasted his trumpet in frustration. He still was having a hard time playing the song for the upcoming school concert. "Ugh," he grumbled to himself. "Why doesn't this sound right?"

"Ty? Are you okay in there?" his mom called out from the kitchen.

Tyrone's older brother, Marcus, beat him to the reply. "Well, his trumpet playing is definitely not okay! Is that a trumpet in there or an obnoxious duck?"

Mom gave Marcus a stern look. Before she could correct him for his unkind comment, Tyrone burst out of the room and slugged his brother in the shoulder.

"Hey! Cut that out!" yelled Marcus as he went to retaliate with a slug of his own.

"Boys!" Mom quickly separated her two sons and stood between them with a firm hand on each of their shoulders. "This kind of behavior and attitude is unacceptable. Do you know what Jesus prayed for the night before he died on the cross to pay for our sins? That His followers would live in unity--in peace with one another. When the two of you get along, you reflect the love of Jesus. Your kind conversation is music to my ears! But your current attitudes are way off-key."

Tyrone sighed and turned to his brother. "I'm sorry I hit you, Marcus."

"Me too," said Marcus. "And I'm sorry I said you sounded like an obnoxious duck."

"Yeah, well, I know I don't sound great," Tyrone replied. "I'm just so frustrated because I can't get this one part in the song. Every time I play it at school with the band, it sounds like a train wreck."

Mom looked down at the sheet music in Tyrone's hand. She pointed to the key signature. "Did you remember that this note is down a half step? This part of the song is in B flat, not B natural."

"Oh--that must be it! Thanks, Mom!"

Mom smiled. "Glad to help. And now that we fixed that situation, I hope the harmonies of the band music will remind both of you to live in harmony with each other." Emily Rudolph

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do your conversations and interactions with friends and family sound like beautiful music? Or are they full of yelling and arguing that’s unpleasant and off-key? Remember Jesus’ prayer for His followers—that we would be “one,” united in showing the world God’s love. Work together, play together, and live together with Christ’s love leading the way.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Romans 12:16 (KJV)

Live in harmony with one another.

Rich or Poor (Wednesday)

Read: James 2:1-5

"We have three new girls in my class," Mae told her mom. "I really like one of them. Her name is Olivia. Can I invite her to my birthday party?"

"Sure," said Mom. "But you're inviting all the girls in your class, aren't you? The party will give the new girls a chance to get to know everyone better."

Mae shrugged. "I guess so, but I don't think Audra and Carrie--the other two new girls--will fit in with me and my friends." Mae jumped up as a car pulled into the driveway. "Morgan's here!"

Later that afternoon, Mom walked past Mae's room and overheard the girls talking about the new members of their class. "Olivia has such nice clothes," said Morgan. "Much nicer than Audra's or Carrie's."

"Yeah. Audra and Carrie look like they're poor. I really don't want them at my party." Mae got up. "Let's go see if supper's ready."

Mom smiled when the girls appeared in the kitchen. "Come help set the table," she said. "Let's see, why don't you set your place here at the counter, Mae? And set a place for Morgan in the dining room with the rest of us."

"Why would I sit at the counter?" asked Mae. "There's room for all of us in the dining room."

"But you have blonde hair, and we all have darker hair," said Mom.

Mae stared at her mom. "So what? I can't help the color of my hair!"

"True," said Mom. "Audra and Carrie can't help it either if they can't afford nice, new clothes."

Mae and Morgan looked at each other, knowing Mae's mom must have heard what they had said.

"How do you think they'd feel about being left out for that reason?" asked Mom. "And how do you think Jesus feels about it? He loves them just as much as He loves you. He died for their sins too so they could have new life in Him, which is worth far more than money or nice clothes. Yet you aren't willing to be friends with them."

Both girls hung their heads. "I'm sorry," said Mae. "I'll invite them to my party and try to get to know them better. I really hope they'll come."

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you kind and friendly to everyone? Or do you look down on those who aren’t very popular, or who don’t have especially nice clothes or wear the most popular name brands? Jesus didn’t just die for people who are rich or popular—He died for all of us! If He loves and includes everyone, so should we. Treat everyone the way He would.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: James 2:9 (KJV)

If you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. (NLT)

Bully (Part 1) (Thursday)

Read: Isaiah 41:10-13

Tina pushed her bowl of cereal away. "Tina, are you feeling okay?" Dad asked. "You haven't finished your breakfast all week. I'm taking you to school in ten minutes, so you need to finish up."

Tina's eyes filled with tears. "Dad, I don't want to go to school!"

"Honey, talk to me." Dad pulled a chair up next to his daughter. "You've been really upset about going to school lately. Want to tell me why?"

"I'm afraid to!" Tears ran down Tina's cheeks.

"You're my daughter, and I promise to always listen to you and help you."

Tina took a shaky breath. "You know Melanie? She's been yelling at me lots. Yesterday I was partners with Stacy during gym class, and after class was over, Melanie yelled at me and said I could only be partners with her. Then she hit me really hard on my arm and said if I told anyone she would tell the whole class all my secrets!"

Dad hugged Tina. "How long has this been going on?"

"About a month. None of the teachers notice because she only yells and hits me when no one is watching. I'm scared of her, Dad. I don't know what to do!"

"Tina, it's never okay for someone to hurt you. The first thing you need to do is tell an adult, and I'm glad you had the courage to tell me. I'm going to talk to your teacher before school today. Until her parents are informed and the adults come up with a solution, I'm going to make sure an adult will be watching you at all times. If Melanie makes you uncomfortable, it's okay to say, I'm sorry, Melanie, but you are not speaking to me in a kind way,' and then walk away."

Tina nodded. "I'll try, Dad."

"Let's pray before we leave," Dad said, and they both bowed their heads. "Jesus, we are asking for Your protection over Tina. I pray she would be bold enough to tell Melanie no when she is hurting her. Give us all wisdom on how we can help both girls through this. Help Tina remember she doesn't have to be afraid because You are always with her. Amen." Savannah Coleman

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you been bullied by another kid—or even an adult? You may be scared to tell someone, but if you’re being hurt by someone’s words or actions, it is NOT okay. You are God’s child, and He loves you and wants you to be safe, physically and emotionally. Tell an adult who you trust about what’s going on. Remember that Jesus is always with you, and trust Him for courage and protection.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Isaiah 41:13 (KJV)

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (NIV)

Bully (Part 2) (Friday)

Read: Psalm 46; Hebrews 4:14-16

Tina froze in the hallway as Melanie walked up to her. "Hey, Tina! I'm sorry about everything I said to you and everything I did. Want to come over to my house after school?"

Tina's mouth felt like cotton. She didn't want to say no because she was afraid of what Melanie might do, but after Melanie's bullying, she really didn't want to go to her house again. She remembered what her dad told her to do if Melanie made her uncomfortable. Jesus, she prayed, please help me be kind but also to be brave and speak the truth. "That's nice of you to ask, Melanie, but no thanks. But if you want, you can sit with me and Grace at lunch today." Tina offered a small smile. Melanie's eyes narrowed, and for a moment Tina was afraid she was going to say something unkind, but then she turned on her heel and walked away.

On the way home from school, Tina talked to Dad about her conversation. "Miss Daisy, the school counselor, has been helping me practice saying no and speaking what is really on my mind. I'm glad, because I sure had to use it today!"

"I'm proud of you for setting boundaries about not being alone with Melanie until you can trust her again, and also for being kind enough to invite her to sit with you and your friend at lunch."

"Thanks, Dad!" Tina smiled. "I've been pretty scared of Melanie these past few months, but Jesus is helping me remember to focus on Him and how He's with me instead of my fear."

"So that's why you taped that verse up on the bathroom mirror?" Dad asked.

"Yep! Proverbs 29:25 says, Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.'"

"I'm glad you're keeping God's Word close to your heart!" Dad said as he pulled into the driveway. "Well, how about after a celebration snack of ice cream, you start cleaning your room? It's been a little neglected lately because of everything going on." "No, Dad," Tina said firmly.

"Excuse me?" Her father raised his eyebrows.

"Just kidding, Dad!" Tina giggled. "Told you I was getting better at saying no!" Savannah Coleman

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you ever have trouble setting boundaries with friends or other people? Although it’s important to be kind and forgiving, don’t say yes to anything you’re not comfortable with, especially if it hurts you or you know it’s wrong. Ask for a trusted adult’s help if you have trouble saying no, and trust Jesus to help you be kind, truthful, and brave.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 1 Corinthians 16:13 (KJV)

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. (NLT)
