Praying for Answers (Monday)

Read: 1 JOHN 5:14-15

Sophia used to come home from school to cookies on the table and a big hug from her mom. She used to sit down and tell her mom all about her day as she ate the warm, gooey treats.

But for the past several months, she'd come home to a quiet house and no cookies. She would walk through the house until she found her mom either lying in her bed or seated on the couch with a blank expression on her face.

Sophia didn't know what was wrong, but something had changed. Her mom wasn't the person she used to be.

"Where's Mom?" Sophia asked one day when she came home from school to find her dad in the living room and her mom nowhere in sight.

Dad rubbed a hand down his face, his eyes tired. "She's at the hospital."

"Why?" Sophia asked.

"She needs help," Dad said.

Tears filled Sophia's eyes. "Is she okay?"

Dad sighed. "I'm praying she will be."

"What if your prayers don't work?" Sophia asked, clenching her fists. "What if she's not okay?"

Dad frowned. "The doctors are going to help her as best they can, and we're going to have to trust God to take care of her. God always hears our prayers, but He may answer them in a different way than we want."

"I just want Mom back." Sophia sat down on the couch and pulled her knees up to her chest.

"Me too." Dad sat down beside her and gave her a hug. "But she needs help. I think you know that."

Sophia swallowed hard and leaned into her dad. "I really hope God answers our prayers like we want Him to."

"So do I," Dad said. "But we need to trust Him no matter what. We need to remember that Jesus died for our sin and the brokenness it causes. He will be with us no matter what happens, and He will make Mom well again one day, even if it's not as soon as we want."

A tear ran down Sophia's face, and she didn't brush it away. Please, Jesus, she prayed. Please answer our prayers and help us to trust You. BETHANY ACKER

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you or someone you love going through a difficult time right now? Do you keep praying, wondering if God will answer? He hears each one of our prayers, but that doesn’t mean He always answers the way we want Him to. Remember how much Jesus loves you and His promise to be with you in hard times. Trust Him to answer your prayer in the way He knows is best.

Weed Your Mind (Tuesday)

Read: PHILIPPIANS 4:4-8

"I hope all the seeds we planted come up," said Diego as he looked at the area where he and his grandfather had just finished putting in rows of peas, carrots, and other vegetables.

Grandpa leaned on his hoe. "I do too. I just hope we don't get too many plants from seeds we haven't planted." He grinned at Diego's puzzled expression. "I'm talking about weeds. We usually get quite a crop of them," Grandpa explained, "but you've never seen me buy seeds for weeds, have you?"

Diego laughed. "No, they seem to come up by themselves!"

Grandpa wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. "I think our minds are a little like a garden," he said, "and our thoughts are like the plants. Bad thoughts are like weeds. You don't have to try to put bad thoughts in your mind. They seem to just come on their own."

Diego glanced quickly at his grandfather. Does Grandpa know what I've been thinking? he wondered. He sighed. "I know. I catch myself thinking about bad things sometimes," Diego admitted. "You know? Like some of the stuff I've seen on TV or some of the things kids talk about at school."

Grandpa nodded. "I understand perfectly."

"You do?" Diego looked at Grandpa in surprise.

"Sure," said Grandpa. "Everyone struggles with bad thoughts at times. But like weeds, they can be pulled out. I find the best way to get rid of bad thoughts is to focus on the good seeds God has planted instead. When I remember that Jesus died and rose again to free me from sin and has given me His goodness, it helps me weed out my bad thoughts and plant good thoughts instead."

"Good thoughts like Bible verses and stuff?" asked Diego.

"Yes, I can plant good thoughts by reading and meditating on God's Word, or thinking of ways I can help others and share His love with them, or even just remembering good things He's done in my life. Even though I still have bad thoughts sometimes, it's hard for weeds to take root when my mind is focused on good things like that."

"Thanks, Grandpa," said Diego as he dug his hoe into the earth. "I'll remember that." HOLLY F. CEPEDA

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you struggle with bad thoughts? Everyone does at times. Sometimes it can seem like they just pop into your head. But that doesn’t mean you have to let them stay there. You can weed them out and plant good thoughts instead. When you have a bad thought, think of God’s love for you or something you could do to help someone else There won’t be room for weeds when you fill your mind with good things.

Caught in the Web (Wednesday)

Read: EPHESIANS 4:29-32

Darien scowled at his tablet screen. 2Cool4U was the worst. He had been playing a game online where they could chat with the other people involved, but this player was mean. Darien gritted his teeth at the rude remark that appeared on his screen.

"Darien! Technology time is up!" Dad called from the next room. Darien typed a less than kind message back before signing off.

In the weeks that followed, 2Cool4U's messages made Darien more and more upset. His anger erupted like a volcano one day when his sister accidentally ruined his connecting block creation.

Dad entered the room with a frown. "Darien, we need to talk." Darien suppressed the urge to roll his eyes as he flopped on the couch next to his dad. "What's going on, son? You've been quick to get angry these past few weeks. Is something bothering you?"

Before Darien could stop himself, the truth flowed out. "That game I've been playing...there's a player on there who won't stop saying mean things! I should have told you, but instead I decided to get back at him, and I said some pretty mean things. Now I feel sick to my stomach every time I look at my tablet." Darien hung his head.

Dad put his hand on Darien's shoulder. "I'm glad you finally told me, Darien. This is serious stuff. The Bible says words have the power of life and death. It's not right to attack someone with words--whether it's in person or on the internet. Once you start arguing and attacking, you're like a fly that gets caught in a web. The more you try to fight your way out, the more stuck you become."

"So how do I get unstuck?" asked Darien.

"Well, first you need to tell Jesus about the unkind things you said and ask Him to forgive you. Then I think you should apologize to the person you said those things to."

"But what if he keeps saying mean things to me?" Darien asked.

"Then you need to let me know so we can decide if we need to block or report him," Dad said. "But don't say mean things to him in return. Break out of the trap by showing him the love and forgiveness of Jesus." SAVANNAH COLEMAN

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you respond with anger and mean words when someone says something that upsets you? That can quickly become a web you don’t want to get caught in. Instead, remember you belong to Jesus and trust Him to help you respond the way He would. He will help you break free from the web of anger and bitterness and respond in a loving way instead.

Walking Worthy part 1 (Thursday)

Read: EPHESIANS 4:1-6

Lola flung her backpack into the car and slammed the door behind her. With a snort, she folded her arms across her chest and scrunched her face into a furious scowl.

Silently, Dad navigated out of the primary school parking lot and eased into traffic headed toward their home in Lagos, Nigeria. "Rough day?" he asked finally, meeting Lola's eyes in the rearview mirror.

"It was horrible!" Lola said. "Mrs. Coker made me class captain for the day, but then embarrassed me in front of the whole class by saying I wasn't acting like one and had Ronke take my place. I'm never going back to school again!"

"That does sound rough," Dad agreed. "Why did she do that?"

"Well..." Lola hesitated. "All I did was read a note Dami passed me. It was really funny, and we were laughing when Mrs. Coker came back into the classroom."

"What were you supposed to be doing?" Dad asked.

"She gave us an assignment," Lola replied. "But I was already done, and she didn't even look at my work!"

"Hmm," Dad said thoughtfully. "This reminds me of a Bible verse in Ephesians, where Paul encourages believers to walk worthy of their calling."

"What does that mean?" Lola asked.

"Paul wrote to believers in Ephesus reminding them that God had called them to be His people and representatives in the world. He encouraged them to walk--or live--in a way that showed others Jesus had saved them from sin and that God's Spirit lived in them."

"Oh," Lola said.

"Being chosen to be class captain is quite an honor," Dad continued. "I'm sure Mrs. Coker picked you because she believed you would act in a way that would set an example to the rest of the class and help them learn."

"But I didn't," Lola said quietly.

"Not today," Dad said, "but that doesn't mean you couldn't do so tomorrow, or the day after."

"I'll have to go back to school for that to happen," Lola said.

"Yes, you will," said Dad, smiling at her in the rearview mirror.

Lola grinned. "Okay, I'll go. I know I can walk worthy and be a good class captain!" REMI OYEDELE

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you live in a way that shows others you’re a Christian? If you know Jesus, He’s given you the Holy Spirit to help you live the life He’s called you to live—a life that points others to Him. Trust Him to help you walk worthy so others can see that you belong to Him.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:  EPHESIANS 4:1 (KJV)

I [PAUL]…BESEECH YOU TO WALK WORTHY OF THE CALLING WITH WHICH YOU WERE CALLED.

Walking Worthy part 2 (Friday)

Read: JOHN 15:3-5

Lola and her parents applauded as the founder of a Nigerian charity was honored for her contributions to society. "Her family must be so proud," Mom said with a smile.

Dad nodded. "I know I would be!"

"I want to be like her when I grow up," Lola chimed in. "If I could be as worthy as she is, I could be head girl at school one day, not just class captain!" For a moment, Lola's eyes sparkled at the thought, but then her shoulders slumped. "Who am I kidding? I'll never be good enough for anything like that."

"Whoa, what's all this?" Mom asked in surprise. She listened closely as Dad explained Lola's misadventures as class captain at school earlier that day.

Lola sighed when Dad was done. "See? I knew I should have waited until recess to read Dami's note, but she writes the funniest things, and I just couldn't help myself. What if that happens again next time I'm chosen to be class captain?"

"Quite right," Mom said. "Chances are you'll do the same again next time."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mom!"

"However," Mom continued with a laugh, "there's someone who can help you do the right and worthy thing next time, and every other time after that."

"You and Dad won't always be there to help me," Lola began.

"No, we won't," Mom agreed. "But Jesus is. He sent the Holy Spirit to help and guide us through life. The Holy Spirit connects us to Jesus and gives us the power to do what's right. When we follow His leading, we can resist the temptation to do things that are wrong."

"That's right," Dad put in. "In fact, Jesus said that without Him, we can do nothing; only by His power can we live the lives He's called us to live."

"So," Lola said, "God doesn't expect me to be worthy all by myself?"

"Of course not!" said Mom. "We could never be worthy on our own--we're only worthy because Jesus saved us from sin and gave us His goodness. He makes us worthy. As we set our minds on Him and His desires, He empowers us to live fruitful lives that point others to Him."

"Phew!" Lola exclaimed. "I'm glad He makes me worthy!" REMI OYEDELE

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you ever feel unworthy? Are you afraid you won’t do the right thing when you need to? None of us is worthy apart from Jesus. But when we trust Him as our Savior, He makes us worthy! He gives us His goodness and sends us the Holy Spirit, who gives us the power to live a worthy life. Because of Him, you are always worthy and able to choose to do what’s right.
