A Promise is a Promise (Monday)

Read: JAMES 4:13-15

"It's so warm and sunny out today. I wish we could go to the beach," said Keziah at the breakfast table.

"Good idea!" said Dad, and Mom nodded. "Let's go this afternoon. We can bring a picnic and stay to watch the sunset. We'll plan to leave as soon as I get home from work."

"All right!" Keziah gave her dad a big hug as he got up to leave.

When Keziah got home from school, Mom had disappointing news. "I'm so sorry, honey, but we can't go to the beach today. Dad called and said he has a big project that has to be completed by tomorrow afternoon. It was coming along fine, but his computer crashed today and he lost some of his work and has to redo it. We'll have to postpone the beach until another day."

Keziah's face fell. "But--that's not fair! Dad said we could go."

"He planned to go, but now he has to work late," said Mom. "His boss and coworkers need him to finish his part of the project."

"But he promised!" wailed Keziah. "And a promise is a promise!"

"Hold on," said Mom. "He didn't promise. He said we'd plan to go. When circumstances change, it's sometimes difficult or even impossible to carry out our plans."

Keziah plopped down into a chair. "But I've been waiting all day to go to the beach."

Mom pulled up a chair next to her. "I know it's disappointing, honey. Dad and I are disappointed too."

Keziah sighed. "I know Dad would go if he could. And I'm sorry he has to do all that work over again."

Mom nodded. "When our plans don't work out the way we want them to, we need to remember that God is in control. The Bible tells us that we always need to be aware that our plans may not be God's will and be willing to submit to Him. We can trust Him, even when things don't go according to plan, because we're part of His bigger and better plan--a plan to save us and make the whole world right one day. He promises His plan for our lives is a good one--and that's a promise you can count on." LINDA M. WEDDLE

HOW ABOUT YOU?

When something happens that causes plans to change, do you have a good attitude about it? Only God knows what a day will bring, so be careful not to depend too much on your own plans. Even though it’s disappointing when you aren’t able to do something you had planned, trust God to use each day of your life in His great plan of salvation. He loves you and promises to do what’s best.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: JAMES 4:15 (KJV)

YOU SHOULD SAY, “IF THE LORD WANTS, WE WILL LIVE AND DO THIS OR THAT.” (ERV)

The Lifeguard of our Lives (Tuesday)

Read: PSALM 56:3; ISAIAH 43:1; MATHEW 14:27-31

"Yay! I get to play in the pool," Robby exclaimed on his way to swim lessons.

"I'm glad you're excited about learning to swim," said Dad.

As they walked to the pool, Robby saw his teachers at the deep end. One of them did a graceful jump into the water.

"Look what Jessica just did! It's like she has no fear of the water," said Robby. As he approached his classmates, the second instructor, Rick, told them they would be learning how to swim in the deep water. Robby stood motionless as his classmates eagerly went to the far end of the pool.

"You okay, kiddo?" asked Rick, wrapping his arm around Robby's shoulder.

"I've never swam in the deep section before," said Robby.

"That's why you're here to learn how to swim. We won't let anything happen to you," said Rick.

Robby looked to his dad for more reassurance.

"Remember Isaiah 43:2," Dad told him. "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you...they will not sweep over you.' That verse is a reminder that because Jesus has saved us, we don't have to be afraid when we face scary situations. Trust Him to help you. And trust the lifeguards too."

One by one, Robby's classmates jumped into the water. When Robby's turn came, fear overcame him again.

"You can do it Robby!" his dad encouraged him.

Robby closed his eyes and jumped. As he hit the water, he thought he would sink. But Rick brought him up and told him to float on his back. Robby trusted Rick to keep him above water, and he was able to do a back float.

"Did you see me, Dad?" Robby asked afterward.

Dad nodded. "I'm proud of you, Robby. You trusted Rick in the pool, and you trusted Jesus to help you not be afraid."

"Rick is a lifeguard, so I knew he wouldn't let me sink," Robby said.

"And Jesus is a lifeguard too," said Dad. "He's the lifeguard of our lives. Even when we face scary things, we know He will be with us and hold us up."

Robby grinned and nodded. "I can't wait to learn more next week!"

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever been afraid of something? Maybe you’ve been scared to go in the deep end of the pool during swimming lessons, or you’ve had to move to a new place where you don’t know anyone. When you face a scary situation, remember that Jesus is always with those who belong to Him. If you know Him as your Savior, He will never leave you. You don’t have to be afraid.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: ISAIAH 43:1 (KJV)

FEAR NOT, FOR I HAVE REDEEMED YOU; I HAVE CALLED YOU BY YOUR NAME; YOU ARE MINE. (NKJV)

No More Work (Wednesday)

Read: 1 THESSALONIANS 4:11-12; 1 PETER 2:12

"See the world! Travel! Learn a special skill!" urged the announcer on TV. "All you need to do is join the Navy."

"Wow!" said Jude, watching a jet take off from an aircraft carrier on the screen. "That looks like something I'd like to do someday. No more homework, no bed to make, no reports to do for school, no chores, no piano practice, no--" Suddenly he stopped. "Dad, you were in the Navy, weren't you? Was it really as exciting as it sounds on TV?"

"Well, I did get to travel and see several different countries," replied Dad, "but not everything we did was exciting. It was hard work! Getting in shape and learning the basics in boot camp was grueling. I even had to make my own bed, and the inspections we had make your mother's inspections look like nothing. After that, I learned about electronics, but that required lots of homework, reading, and on-the-job practice."

"Maybe I wouldn't like the Navy after all," said Jude. "It sounds like too much work."

"It was a lot of work, but the Navy was a good experience for me," said Dad. "God used it to prepare me for the work I do today."

Jude looked doubtful. "What you did in the Navy doesn't sound very much like what they show on TV."

Dad chuckled. "Those who write ads know that people dream of the easy life--little work and lots of fun--so that's what they use to attract attention. But that's not how life should be--especially not for Christians. We do need time to relax and have fun, but Jesus gives us work to do in our lives to help us grow and share His love with others."

"But a lot of the work I have now, like chores and schoolwork and piano practice, doesn't seem all that important," said Jude.

"That ad shows only a small part of Navy life, and right now you see only a small part of your life, Jude. But the work God's given you to do now will prepare you for things He wants you to do in the future. Trust Him to help you do the work He gives you and use it for good." JORLYN A. GRASSER

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you take your work seriously? Or do you try to do as little work as possible? Doing schoolwork or practicing an instrument may not always be fun, but God has given you those tasks for a reason. He will use the work you do—even little things that don’t seem important or exciting—for a good purpose. Trust Him to help you be diligent in the things He’s given you to do.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: TITUS 3:14 (KJV)

OUR PEOPLE MUST LEARN TO DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO DOING WHAT IS GOOD, IN ORDER TO PROVIDE FOR URGENT NEEDS AND NOT LIVE UNPRODUCTIVE LIVES. (NIV)

Stage Fright (Thursday)

Read: EXODUS 4:10-12

Simone sighed when she heard her English assignment. "You're all going to give a short speech next week," said Miss Hollis. "Pick any topic that interests you and be prepared to talk about it for two minutes."

After class Simone approached her teacher. "Please don't make me give a speech, Miss Hollis. I just can't talk in front of people!"

Her teacher smiled kindly. "Stage fright is natural, Simone. I'm sure you'll do fine."

Simone shook her head. "I'll mess up! I know I will, and the other kids will laugh at me!"

"Don't worry so much about what others will think, Simone," Miss Hollis replied. "Shift your focus away from yourself and concentrate on helping your audience learn something new." Simone still looked doubtful. "And practice!" added Miss Hollis. "Practice in front of a mirror, and give your speech to your family. That will help you."

When Simone got home, she shared her fears with her mother. "You know what?" said Mom. "In a way, I suffer from stage fright too. Sometimes I feel Jesus wants me to speak about Him to someone, but I get nervous and wonder what to say and what the person will think of me. You've helped me realize that instead of focusing on myself, I need to follow God's leading and help that person know more about who He is." She smiled at Simone. "Let's pray for each other. God will help us both."

When Simone's turn came to speak, she swallowed hard and walked up to the front. "My topic," she began in a shaky voice, "is stage fright. I really feel like an expert on this subject." The kids laughed--they liked her humor--and Simone began to feel better. She talked about the causes of stage fright and about some famous people who dealt with it.

"That wasn't so bad after all," Simone told her mom that evening. "I know God helped me, and I'm thankful for that."

"He helped with my stage fright too. I was able to talk to Mrs. Beck about Jesus today," Mom said, giving Simone a hug. "I'm so glad God is always with us and will help us speak in scary situations." SHERRY L. KUYT

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you nervous when you have to talk in front of a group? Talk to God about it. He cares and will help you with any struggles you have. Are you also nervous when you have an opportunity to tell one of your friends about Jesus? He’ll help you with that too. Long ago, He promised to show Moses what to say. Trust Him to help you find the right words when He wants you to speak. Then leave the results to Him.

NOW GO! I WILL HELP YOU SPEAK AND I WILL TEACH YOU WHAT TO SAY. (CSB)

No Changes (Friday)

Read: JAMES 1:17; MALACHI 3:6

"Mom, I can't find anything in this kitchen!" complained Emilee loudly. "How can I make brownies if I don't know where anything is?"

"Yeah," said Adrian. "Why did you change everything around? I was going to make a cup of hot chocolate yesterday and couldn't find the stuff."

"I told you I needed to experiment a little since the kitchen is new," replied Mom. "I didn't like the way the kitchen work flowed, but I had to try it a while before I could figure out how to improve it. I may even have to change it again--after I see how it goes with things this way." Adrian groaned, and Emilee rolled her eyes. Mom laughed. "You'll find the brownie mix on the bottom shelf of the corner cupboard."

Dad grinned. "I'm glad some things never change."

"Me too," said Adrian. "I'm glad Mom doesn't go in and change my room."

"But sometimes changes make things better," said Mom.

"Yeah--so maybe she should go and tackle your room, Adrian," Emilee teased.

Adrian shook his head. "I like my room just the way it is."

"Actually, I wasn't thinking of changes in the house," said Dad. "I was thinking of God. The Bible says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Can you think of things about God that stay the same?"

"I know one," said Adrian. "The way to be saved and have eternal life doesn't change. That's a good thing. What if we had to get perfect scores in Bible class to get to heaven?" He grinned. "Emilee would never make it."

Emilee laughed. "Or what if we had to go a whole year--or even a day--without doing anything wrong to be accepted by God? Then Adrian would never make it."

"None of us would," said Dad. "I'm glad God's gift of salvation through Jesus never changes."

"And neither does His love for us," added Mom.

Dad nodded. "Part of God's greatness is that He's always the same. He's the one unchanging factor in an ever-changing world." KAREN R. LOCKLEAR

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you noticed that everything seems to change? Music, friendships, and dress styles change. Even what people think is right and wrong doesn’t stay the same year after year. Some changes are good; some are not. But God will always stay the same. His standards of right and wrong don’t change. He will always love you and keep His promises. If you know Jesus, you can be sure He will never leave you and that you’ll live with Him forever.
