Under New Management (Monday)

Read: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

"Everybody all set?" asked Dad as his family piled in the car after shopping for a new couch. "Are we all buckled in?"

"I'm ready," said Eli. "But after trying the comfortable recliner in that store, these seats feel like stone or marble or something."

"That's a really nice store now," observed Hadassah. "It used to be such a dump!" "I know," said Mom. "I can hardly believe how much it's changed!"

Hadassah glanced at the store flyer in her hand. "They have a new manager," she said, pointing to big, yellow letters on the flyer. "See! It says here, ‘Under New Management.' Maybe that's why things changed so much."

"Perhaps the new manager is more experienced than the old one," said Mom. "They certainly did a good job of getting that store back on its feet."

"Hey, yeah!" exclaimed Dad. "Thanks, guys!"

"For what?" asked Eli, giving Dad a curious look.

Dad grinned. "For an illustration I can use in my sermon tomorrow. Talking about that store made me realize we're under new management too."

"We are?" asked Eli. "What does that mean?"

"Before we knew Jesus, we were controlled by sin and the devil," Dad explained. "We were as much of a mess as that old department store--a much worse mess, in fact! When we put our trust in Jesus, He took over. So now we're also under new management--we're under the most experienced manager there is."

Eli frowned. "I know the Bible says we become new, but I don't think I've changed as much as that store has." "But you have!" said Dad. "Even though Christians still do things that are wrong, we have God's Holy Spirit living inside us, and He's shaping us to be more like Jesus."

Mom nodded. "Even if you don't notice a difference, you've changed. When Jesus comes into your life, the Holy Spirit gives you power to turn from sin and the desire to obey God, and He begins working to make your thoughts and actions reflect Jesus."

"And He'll never quit working on us," added Hadassah. "The new manager at that store could quit, but God never will, right?"

"That's right," Dad said. "Jesus will stick with us through it all." -Dalan Decker

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Whose management are you under? If you trust in Jesus, He has made you a new person and is working in your life. If not, you’re still under the control of sin and Satan. That’s an unpleasant thought, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Why not fire that old manager today? Trust Jesus as your Savior and let Him manage your life. (To learn more, click the "Good News!" button in the right column of this page.) He’s the best manager there is, and He will take good care of you.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) (KJV)

Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Help Available (Tuesday)

Read: Psalm 46:1-3, 10-11; 1 Peter 5:7

"You're home early," said Mom when Marlee came in after school. "I thought you were going to stay and try out for your class play today."

Marlee shook her head. "I changed my mind. The play sounds really fun, but I'm not sure I'd be able to say lines in front of an audience--it makes me nervous thinking about it."

"I'm sorry, Marlee," said Mom. "Have you prayed about that problem?"

"Prayed? Not really." Marlee hesitated. "I don't know!it just seems like I should be able to solve my problems myself."

Before Mom could answer, Marlee saw her cat rolling on the floor, tugging at her collar. "I think something's wrong with Gertrude." She bent down to see what was wrong, but Gertrude jumped up and scooted away on three legs. "Help me, Mom!" Marlee exclaimed.

Mom joined her. "One of her claws is stuck in a slit on her bell. Come on, Gertrude. Be still so we can help you."

But Gertrude would not be still. Each time Mom or Marlee came close, she managed to dodge their hands.

"I think we'll have to wait until she tires out from her own efforts," said Mom. So they stayed near, watching Gertrude struggle as she tried to free her paw.

"Maybe she'll let us help now," Mom said at last. And this time, Gertrude allowed Marlee to pick her up. Marlee held the cat while Mom lifted Gertrude's paw and carefully freed the claw that had gotten stuck in the bell.

"I'm glad she finally let us help," said Marlee as she cuddled the tired cat.

"Yes," said Mom. "You know, I think Gertrude's a lot like you."

"Like me?" asked Marlee in surprise. "How?"

"Gertrude tried so hard to solve her problem by herself--like you've been doing with the difficult situation you face," Mom explained. "You need to trust Jesus to help you with it. He didn't save you from sin and make you His child so you could go through life struggling with your problems on your own. Ask Him what you should do about the play and how to handle it."

Marlee was thoughtful. "Okay," she said. "I'll pray about it." "Good," said Mom. "And if there's anything I can do, I'm here to help too." -Karen E. Cogan

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Is there a problem you’re struggling with? Have you brought it to God? People may say you need to solve your problems on your own, but that’s not what God says. The Bible says to bring your problems and concerns to Jesus in prayer. He knows what needs to be done, and He promises to help you. Talk to Him about your problems. Then relax and trust Him to help you.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Psalm 46:1 (NKJV) (KJV)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

*Verse displayed is NKJV.

The Grouch Next Door (Wednesday)

Read: Romans 12:17-21

"Your yard's looking good, Greg!"

At the sound of his father's voice, Mitch looked out the window and saw Dad give the guy next door a thumbs-up. Their neighbor--who most people referred to as Grumpy Guy--nodded curtly in response.

When Dad came inside, Mitch asked, "Dad, why are you nice to that grouchy guy?"

"Mitch," Dad said, "he's an adult. So, to you, his name is Mr. Oakley. I know he can be unpleasant. Does that mean I can be unpleasant in return?"

"But, Dad, he talks bad about everyone, even you! He says you leave the trash cans out too long and you water the lawn too much. Yesterday he cursed out the mailman. Nobody likes him."

For a moment, Dad was silent. Then he said, "I understand how you feel, Mitch. When I was your age, the neighborhood grouch was Mr. Hardwick. He still lives near Grandma. Every time I saw him, he either ignored me or screamed at me, especially if my Frisbee went into his yard."

"That sounds like Grump--I mean, Mr. Oakley."

"One day when I complained to my mom about Mr. Hardwick, she told me something I never forgot. She said when you meet someone who often seems grumpy, you don't really know what's going on with him behind closed doors. He might have terrible money problems or cancer, or maybe he just lost a family member or has gone through a lot of tough experiences in his life."

"I never thought of that. Do you think Mr. Oakley is sick or something?"

"I don't know. But I do know this--nobody should live in a neighborhood and feel like there's not one person there who would be friendly to him. As a Christian who's been shown God's kindness even though I didn't deserve it, that thought really bothers me. Suppose Mr. Oakley had car trouble and needed a ride to work? I'd want him to look over here and know we would help him."

"I get it, Dad. You want to show him Jesus."

Dad nodded. "A wise man once said, ‘You may be the only Bible some people will ever read.' I want to show Mr. Oakley that Jesus loves him and that he's welcome in the family of God."

-Teresa Ambord

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you know someone who’s often in a bad mood? It might be a neighbor, a teacher, a member of your family, or someone else. It’s tempting to be grouchy to a person who is grouchy to you, but keep in mind, that person might have troubles you don’t know about. Instead of being grouchy, respond as Jesus would. Show that person the love and kindness He has shown you.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Romans 12:21 (NKJV) (KJV)

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Living Water (Thursday)

Read: Psalm 42:1; John 4:13; 7:38; Revelation 7:17; 21:6

"Look, Aunt Bonnie," whispered Lanie. "There are deer by the creek!"

Lanie and her aunt stopped and watched as a mother deer and her fawn drank from the clear stream that followed the mountain trail. The two hikers stood still and quiet, not wanting to disturb the beautiful animals.

Finally, the little family had their fill. The mother deer and her baby stepped gingerly across the rocky stream and bounded up the treed slope.

"Wow!" exclaimed Aunt Bonnie. "Seeing those deer reminds me of one of my favorite verses." "Which verse is that?" asked Lanie. "Psalm 42:1--‘As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.'"

"Our souls drink water?" Lanie pulled her water bottle from her day pack and took a swig.

Aunt Bonnie took a drink from her own bottle before answering. "Our souls need the living water that only Jesus can provide."

"What is living water?"

"Do you know how it feels to be real thirsty on a hot day, after playing a game of volleyball or running a race?" asked Aunt Bonnie.

"Or hiking in the woods?" Lanie grinned. "I sure do!"

Aunt Bonnie sat down on a log and wiped her forehead with her bandana. "God created our bodies to need water throughout the day, but we also need His living water throughout the day--every day for eternity!"

"How do we get God's living water?" Lanie wanted to know.

"Living water comes from God's Son, Jesus," explained Aunt Bonnie. "Jesus died on the cross and rose again to save us, and if you trust Him to forgive you for your sins--all the wrong things you've done--then the living water is yours forever!"

"What about the people who don't believe Jesus saved us?" asked Lanie.

Aunt Bonnie had a sad look on her face. "Then I'm afraid they will stay thirsty. That's why it's important to tell others about Jesus!"

"When we get back home," said Lanie, "I'm going to tell everyone about this hike, the deer, and Jesus's living water!" -Bonnie Carr

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you ever feel thirsty or hungry for something and you aren’t sure what it is you really want or need? God created us to need Him, so the next time you feel dry and empty, don’t just reach for a bottle of water—reach for God’s Word. In the Bible, you learn about Jesus, the only one who can truly satisfy your thirst. He is the living water you need!

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: John 4:14 (NIV) (KJV)

But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Names in Stone (Friday)

Read: Revelation 20:12-15; 21:1-2, 22-27

"The last avalanche of rocks at this site took place in 1990," announced Stella as she read the plaque at the rest stop. She turned to look at the huge boulders along the side of the mountain road. "So all these rocks landed here back then," she said thoughtfully. "I hope no more of them decide to fall today!"

"Hey, look there!" Carson pointed to a big rock bearing the names Jason and Sarah, along with a date from several years before in faded spray paint. "Looks like some kids wanted to have their names written on stone." He grinned. "If we had some spray paint, we could add ours too."

Mom shook her head. "Not a good idea. It's a shame to spoil the mountain that way!"

Dad nodded. "Maybe Jason and Sarah come back sometimes to see if their names are still here."

"Well, they've lasted quite a while, but they're fading away," observed Mom.

"It seems like everybody wants their name to live on forever," said Dad. "You know, I had my name written in a special place too, and it's still there."

"Mitch!" Mom scolded. "You didn't!"

Dad grinned. "Yup. It was when I was younger!before you met me."

"Cool!" said Carson. "Where is it? Can we go see it? You said it's still there."

"It sure is," said Dad. "The Bible says so. My name is written in heaven."

"In heaven!" exclaimed Stella. "On stone?"

"Nope." Dad shook his head. "It's in the Book of Life. When I trusted in Jesus, He wrote my name in His special book where no avalanche can bury it, no rain can fade it, and nobody can come and wipe it out. When He returns to judge the world, my name in that book will prove that He has washed my sins away with His blood and that I belong to Him, and He will welcome me into the new, perfect world He'll create on earth to be with Him there."

"I trust in Jesus too," said Stella.

"So do I," said Carson. "So our names are written there forever, right?"

"They sure are," said Mom. "And so is mine." -Heather Tekavec

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Is your name written in heaven? If it is, that’s a reason to rejoice and give thanks to God. If it’s not already written there, it can be. When you trust Jesus as your Savior, your name will be written in the Book of Life where it can never be destroyed or removed.
