Tried and True (Monday)
Read: 2 Peter 1:16-21
Riley carefully measured a cup of sugar into a bowl. "I like making cookies," she said, "and Dad says my cookies are second only to yours." She cracked an egg and grinned at her mom.
"You do a great job," Mom said as she frosted a cake, "and I appreciate you helping me make treats for my Bible study."
Riley furrowed her eyebrows as she stirred the mixture. "Mom, how do you know the Bible is true? I mean…couldn't it have some mistakes?"
Mom looked surprised. "No, it couldn't."
"Well, Addie's dad is a pastor, and they believe most of the Bible, but he says some of the things just couldn't have happened--like some of the miracles. He says God has set up certain laws of nature, and those things don't fit in."
"God did establish laws of nature," said Mom, "but God Himself is not limited by them. He has power over them." She paused as Riley took the baking soda from the cupboard. "Riley, why don't you put a few extra teaspoons of baking soda in the cookie dough today?"
Riley frowned. "Why? What for?"
Mom shrugged. "Maybe it would make the cookies taste even better. And maybe if you added an extra cup of milk to make the dough nice and soft, you'd get some nice, soft cookies."
Riley stared at her mom, then laughed. "Are you trying to ruin my cookies because you're afraid Dad will like them better than yours? Won't work, Mom! I've made these before, and I know this recipe is just right the way it is."
"You've tested it and found it to be accurate." Mom pointed to a Bible on the counter. "That's also been tested and proven to be accurate. For example, the Bible tells of things that will take place, and many of them have already happened--like Jesus being born and then dying for our sins to save us. He fulfilled many prophecies in the Old Testament that promised God would send a Savior one day. The Bible points us to Jesus, and as we experience His love and power in our lives, it confirms that what God tells us in His Word is true."
"I get it," Riley said. "The Bible is tried and true--just like my recipe!"
-Hazel W. Marett
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you wondered if the Bible is really true? It is! There were eyewitnesses to many things recorded there. Many events foretold in the Bible have already happened. But perhaps the greatest evidence that the Bible is true is its message about Jesus. His truth and love have changed people’s lives. The Bible has stood the test of time, and it will continue to stand forever.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV) (KJV)
The word of our God stands forever.

Made Special (Tuesday)
Read: Genesis 5:1; Romans 9:20; 1 Timothy 4:4
Samantha was staring at the mirror in her bedroom when her older cousin knocked on her door. "Ready to go?" asked Avery. She had agreed to drive Sam to a birthday party across town.
"I don't think I want to go to the party anymore," Sam said. "Mom and I can drop off Juliet's present on the way to church tomorrow."
Avery looked surprised. "Why don't you want to go? You love parties."
"I look ugly," said Samantha. She looked into the mirror and touched her face. "Why did God have to make me with all these freckles?"
Avery sat on Sam's bed. "First of all, you are far from ugly. You have beautiful, curly red hair and big green eyes!"
Samantha frowned. "And brown dots all over my body, fat legs, and ears that stick out! The boys in my class call me Freckle Face and other names."
Avery walked over to Sam and hugged her. "I'm sorry they say things that hurt your feelings--it's wrong of them to do that. But God made you, so you can't possibly be ugly. Those freckles are beautiful because God gave them to you. Your legs are lovely because God shaped them just how He wanted them. And those ears are perfect because God formed them when you were still in your mom's belly!"
Sam turned away from the mirror and looked at Avery. "But I don't feel pretty."
"That's because you're forgetting who you belong to."
"What do you mean?" asked Sam.
"Because you trust in Jesus, you are a child of God, a daughter of the King, formed by the Creator for a special purpose. And there is no one else like you!" Avery brushed Sam's hair from her face. "He made you in His image, and He loves you so much that He sent Jesus to die for your sins so you could be His child."
Sam pulled her hair into a ponytail and then stared at her reflection in the mirror. "If God went to all that trouble to make me special, and if He decided I should have freckles, well--I guess I shouldn't complain."
Avery grinned. "You got that right! Now let's go to a party!" -Bonnie Carr
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you ever feel like you don’t measure up? Maybe you don’t like the way your hair or your nose looks, or you wish you could run as fast or throw a ball as far as some of the other kids. Whenever you feel that way, remember God created you special, just as you are! He made you His child by sending His Son to die for you. You always measure up because He made you and loves you.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Psalm 139:14 (KJV)
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. (NKJV)

Good Servants (Wednesday)
Read: Matthew 25:19-23, 34-40; Romans 12:9-13
"A hamburger for me!" Lincoln announced as he set down his menu. "With French fries!" A smiling young man approached the table. "My name is Kyle, and I'll be your waiter tonight. I heard one hamburger. Is everyone else ready to order too?" Kyle jotted down each order and soon brought them a tray filled with plates of steaming food.
"Why are those people called waiters?" Ashley asked as Kyle walked back to the kitchen. "Because you wait while they bring you the food," Lincoln answered.
Mom laughed. "Actually, to wait sometimes means to serve. That's what waiters do. They serve the customers who come in to eat. They're often called servers instead of waiters or waitresses."
"I learned a Bible verse that says, ‘Wait on the Lord,'" said Ashley. "Is that like being a waiter?" "Wait on God?" asked Lincoln. "We can't serve meals to Him."
"Not meals, silly!" said Ashley. "But we can serve Him in other ways."
"Generally, to wait on the Lord means to be patient and trust Him," Dad explained. "But I think we can apply another meaning to that verse too. Jesus tells us that when we serve other people, we're really serving Him. We're showing others what He's like by making ourselves servants the way He did when He came to earth to die for our sins." He picked up the check.
"Don't forget the tip, Dad," said Lincoln. "Kyle was a good waiter."
"I agree," said Dad. "What makes people good waiters or waitresses?"
"They need to bring you exactly what you ask for," said Ashley. "Did you see those people a couple tables over? They weren't very happy when their waiter brought them the wrong salads."
"And a good server is quick," Lincoln added. "When I asked for more ketchup, Kyle brought it right away."
"And they also need to be kind and courteous so people will want to eat at that restaurant again," said Mom.
Dad nodded. "Doing what others ask, responding quickly, and being kind--those are some of the ways we can serve Jesus by serving others. And one day, when we get to heaven, imagine being greeted with the words, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.' I can't imagine a better tip than that!" -Robert Byers
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you waiting on the Lord by being patient and trusting Him? That’s something we all must do as we walk through life with Jesus, but it doesn’t mean we don’t do anything at all—we can also wait on the Lord by serving others. How can you be a good servant? By responding quickly when your parents tell you to do something? By showing kindness to someone at school? Wait on the Lord by serving others like Jesus.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Matthew 25:23 (KJV)
His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (NIV)

Keep Practicing (Thursday)
Read: Ephesians 6:10-17
Jonah was excited as he skated out onto the ice for his first hockey practice. I'm glad I've been skating since I was a little kid, he thought. I'm already a good skater, so it shouldn't take me long to learn to play hockey.
After teaching the kids some exercises and watching them skate for a while, Coach Thomas called them together. "We're going to practice hitting the puck," he said. Jonah was eager to try it.
SMACK! Jonah's stick hit the ice hard. THUMP! His feet shot out from under him, and down he went. "Try again, Jonah," Coach called as he skated over. "Put your hands on the stick like this." Jonah followed the coach's directions and managed to hit the puck a short distance.
By the end of the practice time, Jonah was discouraged. "It's a good thing I already know how to skate," he told his dad, who had been watching them practice. "Otherwise, I don't think I'd ever get the hang of this. I'm still not sure I will."
"With practice, I'm sure you'll do well at it," Dad replied. "You just need to learn how to handle that hockey stick."
Jonah practiced each day after school. "I'm getting pretty good with my hockey stick!" he told Dad a few days later.
"Great!" said Dad. "I knew you could do it." He looked down at the Sunday school lesson he was preparing to teach. "Are you getting pretty good with your sword too?"
"My sword?" asked Jonah. "What sword?"
Dad smiled and held up a Bible. "This one. God's Word is called the sword of the Spirit. It's even more important to practice using this sword than it is to practice using your hockey equipment."
"Oh," said Jonah. "Well, I learn the memory verses for church every week. Is that what you mean?"
"That's good," Dad said. "But don't just memorize them. Use them. Think about what they say about Jesus--like what He's done for you and who He's making you to be--and put them into practice in the way you live your life."
Jonah thought it over. "Okay," he said after a moment. "I'll practice using both my sword and my hockey stick!" -Shelley L. Russwurm
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you play a sport or a musical instrument or do something else that takes practice? It’s important to practice those things over and over so they become more natural to you, and God has given you a sword that, with practice, makes His truth a natural part of your life. Your Bible is your sword. Read it and use it so you can defeat Satan’s lies and put God’s truth into practice in your daily life.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Ephesians 6:17 (NLT) (KJV)
Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God..

The Brave Thing (Friday)
Read: Proverbs 15:3; Ezekiel 36:26-27
"Come on, we can sneak in. No one will see us," Paige's friend Noelle whispered, motioning for her to join her at the fence.
Paige bit her lip. She wanted to go swimming too, but she knew it was wrong to use their neighbors' pool without them knowing.
"Don't be so scared." Noelle climbed up and over the fence. "Come on. It's easy!" she whispered through the slats.
Paige stood on the other side, not sure what to do. What will Noelle think of me if I don't go over there? she thought. Maybe we can just have some fun with no one knowing…
Paige reached for the fence just as she heard footsteps behind her. She startled and turned around. Ronnie, a boy Paige knew from church who lived a few houses down, was walking toward them, his brows lowered. "What are you doing?" he asked. "That's not your house."
"Um." Paige didn't know what to say.
"Ronnie, you can come too," Noelle said from the other side of the fence. "We're going to swim in the Williams' pool."
"What?" Ronnie's eyes widened. "Did you get permission?"
"No, but they're on vacation, and they hardly ever use it," Noelle said.
Ronnie shook his head. "That would be wrong."
Noelle shrugged. "No one will know."
"God will," Ronnie said.
Paige swallowed. Ronnie was right. "I can't do it either, Noelle."
Her friend scowled and turned away from the fence, walking toward the big, inviting pool. "She thinks I'm too scared to join her," Paige said quietly.
Ronnie shook his head. "You're not scared. You're brave."
"I'm brave?" Paige asked.
"It's easy to do what people want you to do, but it's harder to do what's right." Ronnie smiled. "But you can do the brave thing because you have the power of the Holy Spirit. We talked about that in church last week--how the Holy Spirit lives inside those who trust in Jesus and helps us turn from sin and obey God."
Paige gave him a small smile. "I guess so," she said. "I'm glad you showed up when you did. Next time I'll try to remember that I can be brave and do what's right because I'm never alone. God is always with me."
-Bethany Acker
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you ever feel pressured by your friends to do things you know are wrong? Are you tempted to go along with them because you don’t want them to think you’re afraid to say no? Situations like that are never easy, but if you know Jesus, you don’t have to go through them alone—you have the Holy Spirit to help you. He gives you the strength and courage you need so you can do the brave thing and stand up for what’s right.
TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Philippians 2:13 (KJV)
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (NLT)
