Nobody’s Perfect (Monday)

Read: Luke 18:10-14; Romans 3:20-24

Ariel shrugged when she missed her basketball shot. "Oh well. Nobody's perfect!" she said, and the other girls laughed. "Nobody's perfect" had become a phrase Ariel used often, and her friends almost knew ahead of time when they would hear it again.

One day Ariel went to church with her friend Juliana. "That was interesting,"Ariel said as they walked home afterward, "but I don't agree with everything Mrs. Gates said. According to her, no matter how good you are, you're not good enough for heaven. I don't believe that!"

"But it's what the Bible says," said Juliana. "The Bible says everyone does wrong things--everyone's a sinner. But Jesus took the punishment for our sins, and the only way we can have eternal life is by trusting in Him."

"Well, Mrs. Gates makes it sound like everybody's such a terrible sinner, and that's silly!" insisted Ariel. "I've never done anything really bad. And what about people like my Uncle Jason? He's always helping others. He's a volunteer firefighter, and he also gives lots of money to places like the cancer society and the homeless shelter. And last year when he--" Suddenly she stopped. "Oh, I'm so busy talking, I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing! We just passed my street." Ariel laughed at herself. "Oh well. Nobody's perfect!"

"No, and that's what God says too. He says we're not perfect--we've all sinned by doing things that are wrong," replied Juliana. "Even though what you've done doesn't seem so bad to you, God doesn't see it that way. We all have sin in our hearts, and because God is perfect and holy, no sin can enter heaven. So no matter how many good things you--or your uncle--do, it doesn't get you any closer to heaven. You still have to get rid of your sin, and only Jesus can take it away. Unlike us, He is perfect, and we need to trust in Him in order to be saved."

Ariel was thoughtful as she turned and headed down her street. "Ihave to get home," she said, "but let's talk about this more later, okay?" Gladly, Juliana nodded. Hazel W. Marett

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you fit for heaven? No lying, disobedience, cheating, gossip—or any other sin—can enter heaven. Did you read today’s Bible passage? One person described in those verses did many good deeds; the other asked for God’s mercy. Jesus said the one who asked for mercy was saved—not the one who thought he was good enough because of the good things he did. Which one are you? Admit your sin and trust in Jesus. Under His Wings (Tuesday)

Read: Psalm 91:1-4

Marta jumped off the school bus and sprinted through the rain to the front door of her house. But as soon as she opened the door, she wished she could get back on the bus. Angry voices filled the air. Marta clenched her jaw at the sound of her parents fighting again.

After dropping her backpack in the hallway, Marta ran back out the door. They're yelling even louder than usual, she thought. Why do they always fight?

Marta ran across the yard to the chicken coop and slipped inside to stay out of the rain. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she sat huddled on a pile of hay.

Although Marta could no longer hear her parents' angry words, their yelling echoed louder and louder in her heart until she shook with great sobs. I wish they wouldn't fight, Marta thought as she took a deep breath. She felt so alone. She just wanted her family to be happy. Home never felt peaceful when her parents weren't getting along.

Marta gazed over at the hens as they sat in their nests. Tiny peeping sounds chirped from the hay on the other side of the coop. One hen had recently hatched several chicks, and Marta saw small bits of yellow fluff peeking out from under the mother hen's wings. She knew the hen's wings were keeping the tiny chicks warm in the chilly weather.

As she watched the chicks, Marta remembered a Bible verse she had memorized in her class at church: "Under his wings you will find refuge." Her teacher had explained that it compared God to a mother bird, but God's care was far better.

"Dear Jesus, I feel all alone," Marta prayed. "When Mom and Dad fight, it hurts me inside. I'm glad I can turn to You when I'm sad. I know You promise to never leave your children. Thank you for being with me all the time, no matter what happens. Help me feel safe under Your wings even when my family is unhappy." Marta began to feel peace as she remembered God's promises of faithfulness and love. She knew she would never be alone. Susan Sauers

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do your parents or others in your family fight and argue? Do you ever feel like no one knows what you’re going through? Jesus knows, and He cares. He wants you to come to Him for help—like chicks hiding under their mother’s wings. Tell Him how you feel. Memorize Bible verses that remind you of His love and faithfulness. Find an adult you can share your concerns with. Always remember that Jesus will never leave you all alone.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. (NIV)

The Safety Rope (Wednesday)

Read: Psalm 139:7-12; Matthew 28:20

Gabriela's heart pounded as she looked down at her brother. He looked very small from her perch among the treetops. "You can do it!" he called up to her.

"Easy for you to say, Adrin. You're not standing on a log thirty feet in the air!" It was her first time on the high ropes course at her church retreat, and she was supposed to walk across the log like a balance beam.

Gabriela looked at her father below. "Are you sure the rope will catch me if I fall?" "Absolutely," Dad said.

Gabriela tugged one more time on the safety rope attached to the body harness she wore. She tensed, getting ready to take that first step. You can do it, she told herself. If you fall, the rope will catch you. Just walk out there. She took a deep breath and inched out onto the log. First one tiny step. Then another. And another. Soon she was all the way across.

"Great job!" Dad called. "Now I'll lower you to the ground."

"You're sure the rope will hold me?" Gabriela asked.

"Yes. Trust me!" Dad called back. "Just lean out a little, and you'll feel it start to pick you up." Gabriela did as directed and gasped with relief when she felt her harness tighten around her waist. She let her feet leave the platform and slowly descended to the ground.

"Was that fun?" Adrin asked as Dad unclipped the rope from Gabriela's harness.

"Yeah! I was so scared up there though. I knew the rope was attached to me, but I couldn't feel it. I felt a lot safer after I was off the log and the rope caught me."

"You know," Dad said, "the rope wasn't holding you only when you felt it. It was holding you the entire time." He smiled. "That makes me think of Jesus."

"You mean, because sometimes when life is tough, it feels like He's not even there?" Gabriela asked.

Dad nodded. "But whether it feels like it or not, Jesus is with us all the time, holding us up and taking care of us. He saved us, and He won't ever let go of us."

"So will you go up and walk the log again?" Adrin asked.

Gabriela smiled. "Yeah. I'll do it again." (Sarah E. Avallone)

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are there times in your life when you don’t feel like God is with you? When tough things happen or it seems like God isn’t answering your prayers, do you start to wonder if He even cares? If you know Jesus as your Savior, He will never, ever leave you. He gave His word that He will always be with you. So instead of relying on your feelings, trust Him. Even if it doesn’t feel like He’s there, He is still taking care of you.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

Do not be afraid...the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (NKJV)

Real Winners (Thursday)

Read: Philippians 2:1-4; 1 Thessalonians 5:11-14

Counselor Gary stood in front of a large group of wiggly campers. "Have you had a good time at camp this week?" he hollered.

"Yes!" the campers yelled back. Brayden's voice was a little louder than the others. This was his first time at church camp and he'd had a blast.

"Today is our last day of competitions," Counselor Gary continued. "As you know, those of you with a gold star in any category will receive a special award at tonight's service when your parents are here. So do your best and have fun!"

Brayden nodded. He just needed to win one more event to get a gold star.

"You'll work with a buddy this afternoon, and I've posted the list showing your event and your buddy," said Counselor Gary, pointing to a bulletin board.

The group was dismissed, and Brayden went to look at the list. "Oh no!" he groaned. He went to his counselor. "I need to win one more sporting event, but I'm paired with Nick for the three-legged race," Brayden told him. "He hasn't won a single event all week. Can't I be with someone else? He's going to make me lose."

"Or maybe you'll help him win for a change," Counselor Gary said. "Remember what we talked about in chapel yesterday? All people who trust in Jesus are God's children. We need to support one another and help each other out. I think we can apply that principle to sports too, don't you?"

Brayden sighed. "Okay," he said.

That afternoon when the boys were at the starting line, Brayden grinned at his buddy. "We can do this," he said. "Just keep your arm around me like this so we can move our tied legs like one. Okay?" Nick nodded, looking more confident than he'd been all week.

The race began, and the two tried their best. Brayden's heart sank when they came in second. Then he heard Nick yell, "Oh man! We're second! I've never done so good in my life. Thanks, Brayden! I couldn't have done it without you."

That night when Brayden heard Nick excitedly tell his parents about the race, he felt like a real winner even though he didn't receive the prize he'd hoped for. (Sarah Reeves)

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever left other kids out of a game because you thought they would slow you down? Do you get annoyed when others can’t do things that come easily to you? We all have different abilities, but they’re not just for our own benefit. We need to use them to help others who are struggling and encourage them, especially other Christians. Who could you offer encouragement to? You might find they can encourage you too!

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV)

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.(NLT)

Sodium Chloride of the Earth (Friday)

Read: Matthew 5:13-16

James pulled out his chair and sat down, a smile playing on the corners of his mouth. He waited patiently as his dad offered a prayer of thanks and the food was passed around. Then James spoke up. "Please pass the sodium chloride," he said as seriously as he could manage.

"Pass what?" Dad laughed. "I know what you're talking about, but why did you use that term?"

James laughed too. "We had a lesson on salt today, and I thought I'd ask for it by another name."

"If you were trying to impress us," said Mom, "you did. At least I'm impressed."

"Salt's important," James informed them. "It's used for lots of things."

"Well, I know it's important in cooking," said Mom. "Salt is used to flavor food and also to keep it from spoiling."

"Did you know that sodium chloride is mentioned in the Bible?" asked Dad.

"Yeah, Dad, but not by that name," said James. "It's just called plain old salt."

Dad chuckled. "I'm sure you know the verse that says Christians are the salt of the earth. They help flavor things that happen in our world. Unless..." He stopped and looked at James. "Do you know what would keep them from doing that?"

"Uh...I think the verse says they can lose their flavor, right?" James asked.

Dad nodded. "Any ideas how that might happen?"

"How Christians can lose their saltiness?" James shrugged. "I'm not sure."

"Well, think of it this way," said Mom. "What does it mean when it says Christians flavor the earth?"

"Well...I guess we do that by helping people and being kind and loving," said James. "And by telling them about Jesus."

"Right," said Mom. "When we share the love, grace, and truth of Jesus, we bring flavor to a bland world. We give people a taste of the salvation and hope He offers them."

"So, I guess we'd lose our saltiness if we stopped doing those things and only thought of ourselves, right?" asked James.

Dad nodded. "As the sodium chloride of the earth, we need to flavor people's lives with the love of Jesus." He sprinkled some salt on his potatoes and took a bite. "Mmm," he said. "Now that's good!" (Richard S. Maffeo)

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you sharing the flavor of God’s love with the world? Is it evident in the way you treat others? Do your actions show that you follow Jesus? Do you tell others about Him so they can know Him too? Jesus didn’t say you could be like salt if you wanted to be. He said you are the salt of the earth. Make sure your life reflects His love so others can know how good He is.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

You are the salt of the earth. (NKJV)
