The Science Experiment (Monday)

Read: Job 26:7-14; Romans 1:20

 

"What is that gross stuff?" Missy asked as she walked into her older brother's room.

 

Conner looked at the plastic bottle on his desk. "That's yeast," he replied.

 

"Why is it in a bottle with a balloon on top?" asked Missy.

 

"It's a science project for school. I mixed some yeast, sugar, and warm water in this bottle, and after twenty minutes it's supposed to make a gas called carbon dioxide that will blow up the balloon," Conner explained.

 

Missy studied the bottle. "How long until the balloon begins to blow up?"

 

"A couple minutes. You can stay and watch if you'd like," Connor said.

 

"And then, like magic, the carbon dioxide began to blow up the balloon. It was really cool!" Conner told his dad as they sat down at the dinner table that evening.

 

Dad smiled. "That's a very cool experiment." He turned to his daughter. "Missy, what are you thinking so hard about?"

 

"Dad, how is it possible for God to perform all those miracles in the Bible?" Missy asked. "There are so many stories about all the amazing things God has done, but I don't understand how He was able to do them all. How is it possible to make five loaves of bread and two fish feed five thousand people? And how could water be turned into wine?"

 

Dad set down his fork. "How did the balloon blow up in Conner's science project?" he asked.

 

Missy frowned. "The yeast, sugar, and warm water made a gas that blew it up. Conner just told you all about it."

 

"Yes, he did," replied Dad. "Now, who do you suppose made the yeast, warm water, and sugar so they could make that gas when mixed together?"

 

Missy thought about it. "God?"

 

Dad nodded. "God created everything. He made the yeast, the sugar, and the warm water so they could create that chemical reaction. He made many other chemical reactions possible too. God's hand is in everything. That's how He could perform miracles in the Bible--everything He's created is a miracle, and He has complete control over it. Even simple science experiments are miracles that point to His glory and power and how He cares for His creation--especially us." Kimberly Brokish

 

HOW ABOUT YOU?

What do you see when you look at the birds in the sky, the flowers in the ground, or the people around you? God’s power is not just found in Scripture; it is everywhere you look. If you look closely at His creation, you can see how every part of it reflects God’s glory. Everything you see is a miracle that points to Him and the love and care He has for His creation—especially you!

The Broken Thumb (Tuesday)

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:12-22

 

Mckenzie enjoyed being on her youth group's planning committee, but she frowned when Jaden shared his idea for a youth group activity. "How about planning an outreach program for kids in our community?" he suggested. "And let's give everyone in the youth group something to do. You know--get everyone involved."

 

Mr. Stills, the youth leader, liked the idea. "That will fit in nicely with the Bible study I'm planning for the next several weeks."

 

"But some of the kids never want to do anything," objected Mckenzie. "I don't see how we can get them involved if they're not really interested, so what would we do about them? Or doesn't it matter? Do we really need them?"

 

"Nah."Gabrielle, another committee member, shook her head.

 

Jaden disagreed. "We want them all to have a part," he insisted.

 

"Let's think about that," said Mr. Stills. He turned to Mckenzie. "You broke your thumb a few days ago. Does it matter? How important is your thumb?"

 

"My thumb?" asked Mckenzie in surprise. She laughed as she looked down at her bandaged thumb. "I didn't think I used it much...until I couldn't use it at all. Now that it's broken, I see how much I really need it. It's way more important than Iever knew!"

 

 

"Yes, I thought it might be." Mr. Stills smiled. "And God says that's exactly how it is with the believers who make up His church. All who trust in Jesus are referred to as the body of Christ, and every single member is important--just like every part of our physical bodies is important. Each person has a job to do for the body of Christ to function properly."

 

"That makes sense," said Mckenzie, "but..." She frowned. "I still don't see how we'll get kids to help if they don't want to." She looked at her thumb again. "Or do you think they'll want to help if we show them that we need them?"

 

Jaden nodded. "Yeah. I think if we stress that each person has a part to play in our community outreach program, more kids will want to help."

 

"Good idea," Mr. Stills said. "Let's put it into action." Deana L. Rogers

 

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you think you’re not really needed or able to serve Jesus? If so, you’re wrong. Things you can do may seem small to you, but each part of the body of Christ is needed. What can you do to serve and show people Christ’s love? Help people find their seats at church? Reach out to a kid who needs a friend? Send a card to someone who’s sick? Think of something you can do, and then do it. You are important in God’s family.

Time Is Running Out (Wednesday)

Read: 1 Timothy 2:1-6; 2 Peter 3:3-4, 8-13

 

"I only have three hours left before bedtime," Chris said, "and I haven't started my history paper that's due tomorrow."

 

Jennifer pointed at the wall clock. "You wasted an hour playing video games. You only have two hours."

 

Dad looked at the clock and frowned. "That time is wrong. The battery must have died--you only have one hour."

 

Chris buried his head in his hands. "I need a history story--and time is running out."

 

Dad took out his phone. "I've got one. June 7, 1692, at 11:43 AM. The pirate town of Port Royal, Jamaica, was hit by a massive earthquake--followed by a tidal wave. Thousands of buildings immediately sank about forty feet into the Caribbean Sea."

 

Jennifer sat down at the table. "How do they know the exact time it happened?"

 

"In 1969, scuba divers discovered the town," Dad said. "They found a pocket watch with its hands stopped at 11:43. History records that the disaster happened in the morning. Now we know the exact time."

 

"Time ran out for them," Chris said.

 

Jennifer shook her head. "They didn't have a chance to escape."

 

"No, they didn't." Dad put down his phone. "It happened too quickly."

 

"So, those people got up that morning not knowing they'd meet their Maker soon," Chris said.

 

"Which is why we always want to be ready," Dad said. "Nobody knows how long they'll live--and nobody knows when Jesus will return to judge the world for its sin. On that day, those who have not put their trust in Jesus will run out of time--they won't have another chance to have their sins forgiven. That's why we need to trust in Jesus now. We never know when our time might be up, so we don't want to procrastinate, which means delaying doing something we know we should do."

 

"I hope the people in Port Royal were ready," Chris said. "I'm glad I didn't procrastinate on my decision to trust Jesus."

 

"Me too, son." Dad pointed at Chris' notebook. "But I think you've been procrastinating on something else."

 

Chris grinned. "I guess I'd better get this paper written, huh?"

 

Dad nodded and checked his watch. "I think you've got just enough time." Matt Shoemaker

Leaky Witness (Thursday)

Read: Psalm 40:9-10; Matthew 28:18-20

 

"Mom, can I play my new video game now?" Max pleaded.

 

"Did you finish your homework?" Mom asked.

 

"Yep! All done!" Max replied.

 

"What about Travis--did you invite him to game night at church tomorrow?"

 

"Uh...not yet," Max answered. "But I doubt he'll want to come anyway."

 

Before Mom could say anything, the back door opened and Dad walked in, trying to get the last drop of water out of his bottle.

 

"Hi, honey. How was your run?" Mom asked.

 

"Pretty good, although I definitely need to get a bigger water bottle. This isn't nearly enough for me to jog three miles!" Dad held up his empty bottle.

 

"You sure do drink a lot of water. It's a wonder your joints don't leak!" Max joked.

 

"By the look of his shirt, I'd say he does leak," Mom said, pointing at Dad's sweaty T-shirt. They all chuckled as Mom handed Dad a towel.

 

Dad looked thoughtful as he poured a glass of ice water. "You know, in a way, we should leak," he said.

 

Max raised his eyebrow. "What do you mean? Wouldn't that be a bad thing?"

 

Dad smiled. "Physically, yes. Spiritually, no. Think about it. We trust in Jesus, who died and rose again to save us from sin. We serve Him as our Lord and Savior. However, if we don't let others in on the way we live our lives and we keep our faith to ourselves, we're not completing the task Jesus calls us to do in the Bible--share the message of His love with others. We need to spiritually leak out the good news of God's love and salvation to others by letting them know what He's done for us."

 

"But what if somebody just isn't interested?" Max asked. "Or what if they laugh at us when they find out we're Christians?"

 

"Does God ever give up on us?" Dad asked back. "Did people mocking Jesus stop Him from saving us?"

 

"No...I guess not. I never thought about it that way. You're right, Dad." Max turned to walk away.

 

"Where are you going?" Mom asked.

 

"I have a phone call to make," Max answered with a smile. Elena Ketner

 

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever skipped a chance to share your faith with others? It can be hard, especially with those who don't seem to care or maybe even tease you about it. But how will others know about His gift of salvation if nobody tells them about it? Don’t try to hide your faith. Let it leak out through your life so others can hear the good news of God’s love.

Friends of God (Friday)

Read: John 15:12-17

 

"Did you know there are only three kinds of people in this world?" Kaitlyn asked

 

her Sunday school teacher.

 

"And what would they be?" asked Mr. Richard.

 

"Those who can count and those who can't," said Kaitlyn with a grin.

 

Mr. Richard hesitated a moment and then burst out laughing.

 

"I don't get it. Why is that so funny?" asked Wesley, one of the boys in the class.

 

"I said three kinds of people," replied Kaitlyn, "but I named only two--those who can count and those who can't. So I'm obviously one who can't count. Get it now?" Wesley and a couple of the other kids joined in the laughter.

 

"We could say there are only two kinds of people, and it wouldn't be a joke," said Mr. Richard. "There are those who are friends of God and those who aren't."

 

The class was silent for a moment. Then Kaitlyn nodded. "I trust Jesus as my Savior, so I'm a friend of God, right?"

 

"Me too," said Gideon, and most of the other class members nodded.

 

Mr. Richard smiled. "Good. Are you growing in your friendship with God? And can other kids see that Jesus is your friend?"

 

Wesley shrugged. "How would they tell?" he asked.

 

"Think about the kids at school," said Mr. Richard. "How can you tell which ones are friends?"

 

Kaitlyn remembered seeing girls jumping rope, boys playing ball, and groups of older students talking and laughing with one another. "That's easy," she said. "They hang out together."

 

Mr. Richard nodded. "That's how friendships grow--by spending time together. You made the commitment to be God's friend when you put your faith in Jesus. Now you need to grow that friendship by spending time with Him. You do that by letting Him talk to you as you read and study His Word--the Bible. And you talk to Him through prayer."

 

"But Istill don't see how other kids can tell that God is our friend," said Gideon.

 

"Don't be bashful about letting them see that you're friends with Jesus,"Mr. Richard replied. "As your friendship with Him grows, you'll treat other people in a more loving way. Your decisions will reflect His love and show that you're His friend." Alice Klopstra

 

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you growing in your friendship with Jesus? He says His friends follow His commands, and His greatest command is to love others the way He loves us. Spend time with Him so you can get to know Him better. Your friendship with Jesus will influence the things you value and the way you treat others. Let your life reflect the fact that you are a friend of God.
