A Bad Day (Monday)

Read: Matthew 6:6-13

When Mom heard Milo slam his bedroom door, she knew something was wrong. She found him sitting on his bed with tears in his eyes. "What's wrong, Milo?" Mom asked as she sat down beside him.

"I had a rotten day. I got a D on my English test--the one I spent an hour studying for." Milo sniffed. "And we played basketball in gym today. I missed the basket so often, and then some of the guys in my class made fun of me."

"I'm sorry you had a tough day," said Mom, putting an arm around Milo's shoulder. "Tell you what...I'll help you study for your next English test. We'll see if we can bring that grade up, okay?"

Milo nodded. "Can you help me with basketball too?"

"No, but your sister can. Why not ask her to work with you on that? After school, you can practice what she teaches you."

"Okay," said Milo, and when Kennedy got home from basketball practice, Milo asked her about it.

Kennedy nodded. "Sure, I'll shoot hoops with you. I can show you some pointers, but don't expect to make every basket.Just do your best and enjoy it."

Before climbing into bed that night, Milo knelt and began to recite the prayer he had learned when he was small. He stopped in the middle of it. That little kids' prayer isn't what I really want to say, he thought.

As Milo thought over the events of the day, he remembered the conversations with his mom and sister. It had helped a lot to talk with them about his problems. Then another thought struck him. I guess I can talk to Jesus just like I talk to Mom and Kennedy.

Before he knew it, Milo was telling Jesus about his bad day. Please help me do better in school and in basketball, he prayed. Thanks for giving me a mom and a sister who love me and help me. Thanks for listening, and thank You for caring about all the stuff I do. I'm glad You understand what I'm going through and are always there to help me.

Milo finished praying, got into bed, and pulled up the covers. I'm going to talk with Jesus more often, he decided.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you share your problems with Jesus? He cares about what you’re going through and wants to help. You can talk to Him just like you would a friend or a family member. Tell Him what’s going on in your life. Ask for His guidance, and thank Him for all the good things He’s done for you. He loves and cares for you, and He’s always there to listen and help. You can talk to Him anytime.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Psalm 62:8 (NLT) (KJV)

Trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.

Being Content (Tuesday)

Read: Philippians 4:4-13

"When I get older, I'm going to have a car like that," Henry said as he watched a red sports car zoom by on the road in front of his grandparents' house.

"Yeah?" his grandpa asked from the porch swing beside him.

Henry nodded. "I'm going to be rich."

"Will that make you happy?" asked Grandpa.

"Of course I'll be happy," Henry said. "I'll be rich!"

An old, rattling truck drove by, and Grandpa pointed at it. "Do you think the man in that truck is unhappy?"

Henry shifted on the swing and thought about it. "I don't know. Maybe he's happy."

"But the guy in the sports car is happier than him? Just because he has a better car?"

"Well, he probably has a nicer house too..."

"Hmm," Grandpa said.

Henry knew his grandpa wanted to say more, but his grandma came out onto the porch and said it was time for supper.

When they sat down for the meal, his grandpa prayed and then reached out to stop Henry before he could scoop potatoes onto his plate. "You don't want those," Grandpa said.

Henry's brows lowered. "What?"

"They're not the most expensive thing on the table. Take the steak instead."

"But I love potatoes," Henry said as his grandpa shoved the steak plate toward him.

Grandma glanced between them. "I think he's trying to teach you a lesson."

"Oh," Henry said. "I guess I like the potatoes better than steak, even though they're not expensive."

"You'd be happy just having potatoes for dinner," Grandpa said with a smile. "Sometimes people think expensive things bring more happiness, but that's not the case. You don't need steak, or all the money in the world, to be happy--or, to use a word from the Bible, content. God tells us that no matter what we have in life, we can be content in Jesus, because only He brings true peace and joy." Grandpa stabbed a piece of steak with his fork. "Knowing Him is better than steak or potatoes!"

Henry scooped a big serving of potatoes onto his plate and smiled. "I guess I'm already rich because of Him."

-Bethany Acker

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Is there something you want right now, like a new bike or video game, that you feel would make you happy? Do you think rich people are happier than people who don’t have as much? True satisfaction in life is based on who you know, not what you own. Only Jesus can give you lasting joy and peace. Do you know Him as your Savior? TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV) (KJV)

I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation…I can do all this through [Christ] who gives me strength.

Use Your Reins (Wednesday)

Read: Romans 7:15-25

Kelly urged Sandstorm into a trot as she rounded the field. She loved riding, but today even the sun glinting off Sandstorm's golden mane couldn't stop angry tears from falling. Sandstorm took the opportunity to munch on some tasty grass.

"Kelly, use your reins!" Aunt Selah yelled, jolting Kelly to attention. She pulled at the reins and Sandstorm lifted his head, nickering in protest.

Kelly guided Sandstorm to the barn, and Aunt Selah took the reins while Kelly dismounted. "What's up today? You usually don't let Sandstorm get the best of you."

Kelly sighed. "Jolie and I had an argument at school. We've been best friends since first grade, but I've been so irritated with her lately. I was so angry, a flow of ugly words came out that I didn't want to say."

Aunt Selah handed Kelly Sandstorm's brush. "Sounds like you weren't using your reins."

"Ha. I'm not a horse!" Kelly snorted as she brushed Sandstorm.

Aunt Selah grinned. "No, but you acted like Sandstorm did a few moments ago. He wanted to indulge, but your reins helped him get back on track. He needed to listen to you...just like we need to listen to the Holy Spirit when He tugs on our hearts."

"But it's so hard! Jesus is my Savior, but sometimes the old me just wants to take over, and I say and do things I don't want to."

"The apostle Paul said the same thing," Aunt Selah replied. "In the book of Romans, he wrote that he often did the opposite of what he wanted to do. He felt like he was in a tug-of-war with his old, sinful nature and his new nature."

"What did he do?" asked Kelly.

"He thanked God for saving him through Jesus Christ. Because you trust in Jesus, Kelly, you have His strength to help you with the self-control you're lacking. It's not always easy, but you can speak and act like the new, loving person He's made you to be."

"I've never thought of it that way," Kelly mused as she stroked Sandstorm's muzzle. "Thanks, Aunt Selah. I'm going to call Jolie and apologize...but first, I'm going to talk with Jesus and ask for His forgiveness and guidance."

Aunt Selah winked. "That's my girl! There's no one to help you rein it in better than Him!" -Savannah Coleman

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Have you ever ridden a horse? If so, you know the importance of the reins attached to the bit, which encourages the horse to go in the direction you want it to go. Our thoughts, words, and actions can be a lot harder to tame. The good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. If you are a child of God, you have His power in you. He has given us everything we need to live a godly life. Trust Him to help you with self-control.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Proverbs 25:28 (NIV) (KJV)

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.

Word of Mouth (Thursday)

Read: Psalm 40:9-10; 107:1-3

"How did your appointment go?" Dad asked as Lyla bounded into the kitchen when she and her mom returned from the dentist.

"Good," Lyla replied. "No cavities!"

"Great," said Dad. He cut into a loaf of sourdough bread. "I was just about to have some of the bread I made this morning. Care to join me?"

"Yum! My favorite." Lyla took a slice of bread and poured a glass of milk. "I saw two kids from my school at the dentist's office."

Mom nodded as she hung up her coat. "Dr. Cranston seems to be pretty busy."

"Dad, what does word of mouth' mean?" Lyla asked.

"It means to communicate by talking," said Dad. "Why?"

"The receptionist thanked one of their patients for referring a friend to Dr. Cranston," Lyla said. "Then she said something like, We appreciate getting new patients by word of mouth.'"

"Well, the patient must have told someone else that Dr. Cranston is a good dentist," said Dad. "Satisfied customers are great advertisements. Word of mouth is an effective way to increase business because people trust those they have relationships with and value their experiences and opinions."

"I'll advertise for Dr. Cranston by word of mouth too," Lyla said. "I'll tell my friends he's a good dentist."

"I'm sure he'll appreciate that," Dad said with a smile. "You can use word of mouth in other ways too. In fact, it's something we all do every day."

"You mean because we tell other people about stuff we like?" asked Lyla.

"Right," said Dad. "We share our good experiences with others. And the most important thing we can share is what Jesus has done for us."

"By word of mouth, right?" Lyla said. "We should tell people about Him."

"Yes, and also reflect His love in the way we live. Our attitudes and actions should show that Jesus has changed our hearts. They should encourage others to want to know Him too," Dad said as he buttered a slice of bread. "But you're right. We should talk about Him. We should tell people how loving and good Jesus is and that they can know Him too."

Lyla nodded as she bit into a piece of bread. "Because nothing is more satisfying than knowing Jesus!"

-Shannon M. Huber

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you know Jesus as your Savior? Has He saved you from sin and changed your heart? Then don’t keep it to yourself—share your story with others! Spread the good news of what Jesus did for you by word-of-mouth so others can know Him too. Share the satisfaction and joy He’s given you through your words and in the way you live your life.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: Psalm 107:2 (NIV) (KJV)

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe.

Barking Dogs (Friday)

Read: 1 Peter 5:8-11

"Mom, wait!" Sienna called as she hurriedly tied her shoes. "I'll come too."

Mom smiled and waited as Sienna ran to catch up with her. "I enjoy having you walk with me," said Mom.

"I like it too," Sienna replied. "It's peaceful on Saturday morning."

"Why don't you come with me more often?" suggested Mom.

"Maybe I will." Sienna grinned. "But not every Saturday. I have to sleep in once in a while, you know." Just then, two large dogs in a fenced yard bounded toward them, barking and growling furiously. Sienna squealed and darted to the other side of Mom. Her heart pounded as they hurried along. "So much for peace," Sienna muttered. "Those dogs sound mean!"

"I know, but don't worry. They're behind a strong fence," Mom assured her. "I walk this way every day. They bark a lot, but they've never gotten out. They sound fierce, but they can't get to you."

When they returned from their walk, Mom got a phone call. "I'm going over to the Tillmans'," she said when she got off the phone.

"Mr. and Mrs. Tillman are in your small group at church, aren't they?" said Sienna.

Mom nodded. "They're going through some hard things right now and need someone to pray with them." She smiled at Sienna. "They need a fence to protect them."

"I know you don't mean an actual wood or metal fence," Sienna said.

"No," said Mom. "Remember those dogs this morning? Seeking out other Christians for support when we're facing difficulties is like building a strong fence. It helps protect us against Satan's lies."

"So, Satan is like a barking dog?" Sienna asked.

"That's right," said Mom. "Satan wants to fill us with fear and doubt and get us to give in to temptation. He barks a lot, but because Jesus has saved us from sin, Satan has no power over us. We can stand firm against his lies by building fences that remind us we belong to Jesus--fences like praying, reading God's Word, and seeking support from other Christians. Focusing on God's truth helps us remember that Satan can't hurt us." --Karen E. Cogan

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you being tempted to believe Satan’s lies? Like a prowling lion—or a mean dog—Satan often goes after us when we are hurting and alone. That’s why it’s important to build strong fences that will help you stand firm in your faith in Jesus. Reading the Bible, praying, and seeking out other Christians who can pray for you and encourage you to continue trusting in Jesus can help protect you against Satan and his lies.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE: 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT) (KJV)

Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.
